Ok, well then----Thanks for all the input on caring for my new clam. I do have a question. I noticed a rather large aptasia stalk on the clam when I bought it. I scrapped it off with tweezers before putting it in, but I am now noticing some more growing on the shell(very small) Should I leave it alone or treat it?? Joes juice?? I can pretty easily reach in and put it in a QT for a bit.

Maxima shells make great nooks for aiptaisa to cling onto , u can take a toothbrush (out of the water) and brush it off then rinse. Anyways sorry to hijack your thread. The point I was trying to get at is in the tank we strive and go through great lengths to reduce/eliminate nitrates and phosphates from our water, which are the very things the clam needs to grow. This is why I add phyto. It has no negative side effects and eliminates the risk of starvation for the clam

I got some maximas recently from barry that came in with aiptasia on the shells. I used some kalk mixed into a thick paste to get rid on them. I just mix the kalk up thick, pull it into a syringe, turn off system pumps and squeeze it on the anemone. Just be sure not to get any on the mantle and you will be fine.

FWIW, Fatherree also states studies that show, although phyto was injested by clams, their fecal matter showed that a large portion of this came out undigested. It may not be the case all the time, but I would be willing to bet the benifit of adding phyto to your tank for the clams alone is a waste. I feed my SPS oyster eggs, and AFAIK there may be no benefit but I do it anyhow so to each there own. I personally, along with many many reefers have kept clams for years on end with no phyto feedings and these clams thrive. I would put my preference on keeping my clams in a tank with good water quality, with correct balanced CA, ALK, and Mg. JMO/E........

Like I mentioned earlier I had this problem come up and I rinsed it under fresh water and brushed with a toothbrush. Id also be weary of using calc on a clam that small sinceyour fingers might slip and get it on the mantle

My maximas were attached to larger rocks when I did this, so taking it out would have required me to cut the threads. It was easier for me to kalkpaste. Whatever works!
