Just as we were the first to introduce a 100% web-based reefkeeping magazine back in 2002 followed by a PDF version in 2007, we continue to innovate by introducing a new way for you to read Advanced Aquarist - in print! Now you can take a nicely bound 100% color version of Advanced Aquarist with you where ever you go! All of your favorite content in book form!

2008cover.jpg

The available editions are 100% color paperbacks measuring 8" x 10" in size and come in two separate volumes: the 2007 Edition and the 2008 Edition, Book 1. The 2007 Edition is a compilation of the best articles from 2007 and the 2008 Edition, Book 1 is a complete compilation of the articles from the first six months of 2008.

Both volumes are available either from our print-on-demand publisher CreateSpace.com:

* 2007 Edition: https://www.createspace.com/3343987
* 2008 Edition, Book 1: https://www.createspace.com/3354927

Or from Amazon.com (search for "Advanced Aquarist" on their site):

* 2007 Edition: http://tinyurl.com/59jmn5
* 2008 Edition, Book 1: http://tinyurl.com/568bqr

As the Table of Contents for both volumes are pretty lengthy, links to a PDF of each can be found here (2008 Edition, Book 1: http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2008/11 ... Sample.pdf ) and here (2007 Edition: http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2008/11 ... Sample.pdf ). A sample article is also included in each PDF so you can see what a given article will look like before purchasing a book. The layout of the book is almost identical to our PDF Editions, with the exception that it's been reformatted for an 8" x 10" page size. As you may see from the 2007 sample PDF, some paring down of articles in the 2007 Edition was necessary due to our print-on-demand publisher having a maximum page limit of 250 pages for color books.

We encourage you to spread the word around from person-to-person, online via your blog, the online forums, Facebook, or any other ways you see fit. Let everyone know about it! Buying the print edition will also help sponsor the magazine and allow us to continue to innovate in new and unique ways to continue bringing you new information about this exciting hobby.

We plan to continue to publish our online version as we always have. We started with an online magazine and intend to keep it online so that everyone can quickly and easily access our information from any PC.

Future Plans

We plan to continue publishing new print editions every six months through CreateSpace and Amazon.com so long as we see you, the reader, interested in this format. Future issues may include sponsor ads and product announcements to help reduce publication costs (which in turn would reduce the cost of the book to you) as well as to inform you of new and exciting products from marine hobby manufacturers. As this project progresses, other changes to the format and layout may take place in order to better optimize the printed edition.

We are very interested in your feedback; if you have any questions or comments, please email us at [email protected]. We'd love to hear how we could make the print edition better for you. Send us your likes, dislikes, wants, etc. If you are an author and would like to write for us, please email [email protected] for article proposals, authoring guidelines, and current article pay rates. If you have an aquarium that you'd like to showcase in our magazine, please email Wade Lehmann at [email protected]. For information about advertising with Advanced Aquarist, please contact Leonard Ho at [email protected]. We have a variety of packages that should be suitable for your business needs.

We've put a lot of time and energy into this project and we hope that you enjoy it!

It's been a long time coming on this. I bet I started fleshing this project out about 9 months ago... :P

How's the quality of the pages? Is it like some copy company with a color photocopier? Or glossy book quality pages?

It's not a high gloss paper like Aquarium Corals or Modern Coral Reef Aquarium, if you're familiar with the paper used in these books. CreateSpace (which we used for the project and is Amazon.com's print-on-demand company - see press release here) uses 100% color print on 60# bright white matte paper inner with a glossy 100% color cover. Images were printed at 300 dpi with the exception of various images that were supplied by authors. I looked also at Lulu.com and they didn't have the high gloss inner paper option either for books and they were ~$15/book more for the same paper.

Overall, I was pretty impressed with the print quality with the matte paper. The colors don't "pop" quite as much as a very high gloss paper would allow but it is much better than "some company with a color photocopier." If CreateSpace ever offers the high gloss paper, we definitely will use it so long as it isn't too much more expensive.

If you like holding a physical copy of content to read instead of reading it on a computer screen, the book is definitely the way to go.

So is the book actually bound like a book? Or punchholed? or like the "books" we'd by in college that were glorified typed copies of the teachers lecture notes just glue/bound together :D

Either way this weekend I'm going to have to browse that table of contents, looks like definitely kick-butt bathroom reading material (and i don't mean that in a bad way :D)

Yes, it's actually a bound book. In our case we used perfect binding for the project. Again if you're familiar with Aquarium Corals, the cover is like that along with the binding.

I'm attaching some photos I took of the 2007 edition. Please forgive the quality of the photos as the camera is *old* (2 MP Canon) and I need a new one. :P I had to do a bit of image processing as the photos had turned out pretty dark...

It's a good thing you didn't go with Lulu. I've had experience with that outfit, and talk about a pain in the...!

I actually had pretty good luck w/ Lulu when I printed a sample copy of our November 2007 PDF through their service (I was actually looking at creating a monthly/bi-monthly magazine with their service). It was relatively painless and their cover creation was MUCH simpler than CreateSpace. Lulu had a nice WYSIWYG cover creation program embedded in their website. CreateSpace made me download a cover template and manipulate it with GIMP. It was annoying to say the least. However it did offer the less expensive book option so that's who we went with and will probably stay with unless there's good reason to go elsewhere. :P

Now with MagCloud.com on the scene, I'm half tempted to try creating a monthly magazine through them and making it for sale. Thoughts on that? :)

Interesting...I just learned that MagCloud's paper is "80# matte text stock that is FSC-certified and 50% recycled - 10% post consumer waste and 40% pre-consumer waste." Makes for a nice 'green' printed magazine.

Ok, I'll throw together one and we'll see how many people go for the option. If there's enough we can look into continuing. :)

We had real problems getting Lulu to play well with our .pdf, it lost a lot of information, couldn't read the text, photos were problematic. (This was a motorcycle pictorial book, members sent photos from wherever they were, mapped, etcetera.)

If I still kept aquariums I would prefer to have hardcopy material to read and keep. I don't care for reading entire articles while sitting at the computer, although, as you can see, I have made some adjustments to my library methodology. Thank goodness for the advent of wireless networking, eh? :lol:

The sample TOC links seem to be busted, Shane. Did featured aquariums make it in there? I always enjoy my name in print :D

Strange....the links work just fine for me. What error is it throwing at you when you click on the TOC links? FYI they're in PDF format...

Yep, your 15 gal planted article made it in the 2008 edition. :) I don't recall if you had one in 2007 and if you did, unfortunately it got pulled due to the space limitations of CreateSpace's page count for a color book.

One thing I would have loved to do was a Featured Aquarium compilation publication like the Ultimate Aquariums book. If we'd have more Featured Aquarium submissions, I could have done that (hint hint to everyone reading this post!)

I've also toyed w/ making other compilations as well, but before I do that I wanted to make sure a general print would sell good enough to justify the added work to make a compilation that focused on one specific subject.

Just looked a little closer, it's the links in your post themselves. They've got trailing punctuation that's ending up in the link... pulling it out leads to working .pdf files :D

Yep, your 15 gal planted article made it in the 2008 edition. :)

Just in time for christmas :lol:
