You may want to look for Matt's thread, The Bug Has Bit Me Again. He's got a custom-made bank of LEDs over a 1gal nano. I don't think he's stocked it with corals yet, either that or he just hasn't updated us on it yet.

Actually, I am actually in the planning stages of a DIY LED fixture for my 135 gallon aquarium, so I was hoping to get the opinions of some people that have actually used LEDs in a fixture, which was of course, the original purpose of this conversation, however, most of the opinions given so far have not been based on user experiences. Have no fear, once my fixture is up and running, I will be providing a full, detailed report on the matter. Until then, I am looking for useful information on the TOPIC that can be validated.

So far Reef Central has much more of that information than reefs.org. I was only trying to get another opinion, again, on the topic at hand.

If you think about it, what SeaMaiden said about growing certain plants is relevant for the power question, if not the color spectrum question. So, addressing the "punch" issue.

As for what you're getting in terms of answers, it might be something to do with how you're asking questions.

Sorry Tom, I guess from now on I will have to stop assuming that people have actually read the one page post that they are posting in.

Sheesh... can't we all just get along?

Andrew, the OP posted these questions:
John Kh":1n1wogxn said:
1. Did anyone here used LED ligths for a TANK with Stony Corals before?
2. Please if you have any reviw or comment about those 2 products let me know.
3. Whether you advise it or not? And why? Is it better then MH?

The first question was answered very directly in the RDO Link posted by Tom. In it Matt reported
For comparison, this is what someone made for a 12g tank. Each one of these LEDs is 3W so the intensity is much greater. This one is barely capable of doing SPS from what people are reporting.

The second question was nailed pretty well by Len in This review of one of the specific products the OP asked about and one related product.

The third question has been addressed by everyone else, and all from personal experience. Sea Maiden's comparison to the plant LEDs is very relevant to this third question, especially in her experience that they do not compete with MH. You sidetracked her input with a spurious (and suckily worded) doubt about the spectrum... PAR is PAR, and the technology behind LEDs of any color temperature is the same. I shared my opinion of the PFO and the several DIY projects I've seen. IME you can DIY an LED that can grow SPS, but many dozens of the best binned LEDs quickly adds up to a cost that will outweigh even several/many years of the energy savings over running halides. And Gresham has more firsthand experience with lighting than any of us here and all those fine people at RC. Ain't that right, Gresh? (Personally, I'd rather hear more about that plasma you saw in action! ) But he seemed disinclined to weigh in.

So Drew, what exactly is it you'd like us to focus on? You should tell us about your own experiences with LEDs and/or what your plans are to light your 135. How many and which bulbs do you plan to use? Any unique ideas for the heatsink or cooling? A guy I know is trying to liquid cool them, to make for a super thin fixture. Thoughts?

and btw... definitely keep using those smileys and winkeys; you seemed like kind of a dick before them.
:welcome:

You probably get a reasonable point of view :D Wish you all the best with the new fixture... I thought of doing it myself but then I realized that MH and ready to use fixture are easier to install and use :D LOL, since my time is not helping me doing anything else then work, uni and some gym :P So anyway let us know your review later on.

Seriously Drew, it always helps if you throw a little bit of a contribution in there yourself and take the time to read the information that people post and properly understand it. :D

There are several reviews out there. I googled it, and came up with a bunch of stuff... also the above posts have some links of studies.

Aside from that I do know of a few ppl that have had them and they are not happy with them long term.

IMO the time for LED isn't quite here yet. I'm sure eventually the mfg of them will catch up, but right now they are just too unpredictable.

I had to fight off the urge to buy one for my new tank too, but I'm glad I did.

I went T5.
