I recently noticed i very slight shock in the water when i went to feed the fish, and it's gotten worse. I located the problem to the pump in my sump (mag 9). when i unplug it it goes away. i want to fix this asap. any suggestions. do i need i knew pump? is something else wrong? the fish don't seem to be affected, but i'm clearly not sure about this? any help?

I had the same problem for about two months! I lost a Sohal Tang and a Tusk in these two months and didn't know why. Some of the fish were getting what looked like cotton mouth on their mouth. I was getting shocked every time I placed my hand in my tank. I finally decided to unplug everything and long and behold it was my UV that was broken! Water somehow got in through the seals and into the electrical part of the bulb and caused the shocks I was getting. Since then none of my fish have come up with things on their lips or worst case senario dead!

thanks all. i recently lost a skunk clown all of a sudden and when i put in my hand to check the water it was pretty bad. I unplugged my pump and put some powerheads to keep the flow going to get me through the night. I will post here to see if anyone has a pump.

That's a bummer. A new pump is the way to go, and maybe add a ground probe to the sump as well.

I had this sort of thing happen last year, but it was with the MaxiJet powerhead I use to pump new water into my tank during water changes. After getting shocked one day I found tiny little holes in the MaxiJet's power cord. I had 2 young Siamese kittens at the time (the little devil in my avatar was one of them) and they had apparently been teething on the cord. :catsmiley

Stray voltage not a problem, stray current definately a problem.
IMO ground probes are a mask to a real problem. If you use one make sure you use a GFCI.If not used you may not know a problem exists and it could get ugly.

Don't plug the pump in. My parents lost their entire tank due to a cracked heater in the fuge. I got a really nice jolt to the arm when I stuck my hand in the water. Every living thing in the tank was lost.
