At first I thought what the heck is clam seed but after a quick online search there are several places you can buy clam seeds.
Here is one of them.
http://www.konabaymarine.com/clams.html
Thanks,

That is one site I have missed. I am looking for giant clam seed. I will have to see if this site has giant clams or not. By the way, what was your search terminology. I have looked and not been ver successful.

What's a clam seed?
Its a term to describe samll clams that have just started to attach themselves to a hard surface. They are used in clam rearing operations to start underwater pens for growout. Isn't this a reef forum?

Yes it is but most reef tanks involve setting up corals and clams that are well beyond "seed" stage.

Most reef tankers are not growing out clams for resale or other given the difficulty of that process.

Kinds of like how clownfish breeding is beyond us? Rotifers is a term I bet you have heard.

I think I just searched "Clam Seed" in google and went from there.

Thanks,
Palou is the only source I have found that will ship here.

The clam seed from Hawaii does not look like Tridacna sp. - they look like edible clams to me - that's a food shrimp farm.

If the MMDC in Palau will ship seed, that would be cool and fun to try. If you can get them settled and already inhabited w/ zoox it shouldn't be that hard to raise them.

Cheers

Yes, with concrete bottom tanks, you can seed about 16 per sq. foot. To be economical you would need to grow thousands a year, but as a hobby idea, it doesn't matter.

No not like clown fish. The mortality in raising clams is significantly higher and Joe Tank owner can breed and raise clown fish from one pair of fish repeatedly with ease and have been able to for quite some time.

No such self breeding exists today in the home aquatic environment for clams of any kind that I know of. You have have small clams shipped to you and hope for the best for each shipment and then hope they survive and grow in your tank.

These are two very different animals and requirements.

Thats a neat idea if you have the recources/time to invest. What sort of ballpark are we talking here for the seed?

I have set up a test grow-out system. I will follow it with a greenhouse if the test system works. Clam farming can be done with cages underwater or in tanks. The only issue is light. I will use metal halides in the test, but the energy costs will dictate a greenhouse.

My test system is set up for 200-250 seed clams. I don't know what a minimum purchase quantity will be.
