In some of the display tanks I've seen the larger coral heads shade the their own bases leading to tissue recession and skeleton to be shown. The bigger heads will have up to a third of their base exposed/dead. Is there a way to prevent this and still have larger heads or is this just the nature of the beast and you need to frag regularly and keep them small?

IMO its a nature of the beast, hell the growth pattern alone often changes flow patterns as well so that's another way to have dead coral supporting live coral on top.

However you could circumvent it a bit is through active pruning though, force them grow in a particular fashion, or don't let them get that large "table top" appearance.
