It's been a while since I posted.

Previous skimmer was a euro reef cs5-3. The impeller became warped and finally gave up the ghost yesterday. Hubby and I tried to find a source for parts, but we can't find them. If it's still possible to buy parts for the sedra, I'd rather do that for now. Anyone happen to know where I could get a replacement impeller for it?

The LFSs do not carry anything big enough for my system (75g tank with 15 g sump. So 90 gals total water volume) and suggested I look into recirculating skimmers and cone skimmers. Anyone have any input on these? Hubby and I are considering upgrading to a 90 in the near future, so I'd probably want something that would cover my current system and be big enough for the future system if we have to replace the skimmer entirely. Would love suggestions on where to start looking!

Thanks!
J.

Hi Jo!!!!! Missed ya!

Impellers are pricey, but if the rest of your skimmer is fine, a replacement might be the most cost effective. Currently, cone skimmers are the latest design that everyone is enamored with. It's still a needle wheel skimmer, but the body is shaped like a cone, and they use diffuser plates at the bottom so the bubbles rise more vertically (which supposedly reduces turbulence, which supposedly improves skimming). Recirc skimmers have been around for a while, including Euro-Reef and Deltec. These are needle wheels too, but instead of the pump serving the purpose of feeding the skimmer and providing the air, recirc skimmer pumps just provide the air. Cone skimmers usually are not recircs (though they could be if someone designed them this way). All these skimmer techs perform very well. Your Euro-reef is good too. Again, if you skimmer is fine except for the impeller, getting a replacement impeller might be the smartest choice. If you want a new skimmer, a recirc or cone is definitely a good tech to go. A LFS was right :) There are some pricey recirc and cone skimmers (ATB, Vertex Alpha, Warner, Deltec, etc.). Expect most to be in the $700-1000 range. However, Octopus sells a cone skimmer for $399. The body is pretty much the same; most of the price difference is in the quality of pumps.

$55 bucks for an impeller though ouch.

The Oct cone looks decent I think cone is the new old fad, to me you are just giving up more reactor space by making the cone shape but idk Ive never used a cone.

Thanks for this! This is exactly what I was looking for. I'll have hubby order an impeller today. I appreciate the link for them because I could not find that page to save my life. :)

I had wondered if cone skimmers were a fad. I'm not sure I have enough space in my current sump for one of these things. This looks like it has a much larger footprint than my euro-reef... but it does look like an interesting idea.

Len! *big hugs* I missed you too! Man have I got a LOT to tell you later! :D

I think I am just going to replace the impeller for now (I may just have hubby go ahead and order two of them). I'm not daunted by the price of the impeller, I was just sort of hoping that there was something out there that was better than what I already have. This is the third impeller that we've blown in this skimmer.

In general, I'm happy with my euro-reef, but the fact that I keep blowing impellers and the fact that none of my LFSs carry their equipment is a big pain in the rear. It took two weeks for them to ship me an impeller last time and aggressive water changes and sticking a bucket under the remora I hang on to for situations like this... is not my idea of fun. You know?

I have a euroreef cs-12? with a sedra 5 and 9 that i no longer use, i grew tired of dealing with its flaky ability to maintain constant skimming and went back to aqua-medic, i went larger and got the baby 5000 and have never been more happy.
