My tank reboot thread

I'll do a tank build thread (again) later, but I'll document the take down process for fun (and posterity).

Here's my tank down setup making a mess in my living room. The front clearish container houses the few corals I'm saving. The next blue bin will house my fish, the one in the rear is curing my Totoka live rock (about 100 pounds of the freshest rock I've bought).

Here is my LR bin. Again, 100 lbs of Totoka rock, picked up three hours after they landed at LAX. I'm anxious to get it aquascaped ... really nice shapes and life on them, though you can't tell at all in the picture

Bin is circulated by a prop-moded Maxijet 1600 and a regular 1600 blowing under the rocks. There's a cheapo old-school Coralife skimmer that is struggling. I've changed the water many times, and now it's pretty clear. I'm letting the rock do it's curing thing now without interference.

My fish pen. Nothing to it. There's two MJ 1600 on it, a heater (not really needed), and about 20 lbs of BRS dry rock. The rock was surprisingly clean; all I needed to do was a light FW rinse. The fish are going to be in this bin for a few weeks, so I thought I'd get some rock to put them at ease.

Last small bin is for the three corals left to save: A nice red micromussa, my watermelon chalice (surprised this thing is so hardy), and my 1980s Elegance coral (the kind that lives). The Elegance might not make it though since it already started detaching from its skeleton in the main tank. I didn't notice this deterioration until I removed it.

The bin gets a lot of sunlight but stays below 80 degrees. I used a separate bin for this then the fish because I plan to treat this water heavily (stuff I can't do with fish, like lugol's) before I add the corals into the new tank.

So what's your opinion of the Totoka LR? How does it look up close? :wink:

It's really nice rock ... my second favorite behind Marshalls. Totoka is very knarly and has a nice variety of life and color. I got some huge pieces so I should be able to do some interesting aquascaping.

Looks good Len, make sure you dont have an ammonia spike in the fish curing bin if they are in there for a few weeks.

Cant wait to see pics of the rock once you scape it.

I have one for each bin to use for testing purposes as I'm paranoid about cross contamination.

My rocks and fish come out in 3 hours. I'm not looking forward to today and tomorrow's work. 8)

Your dry rock is going to cycle. I would not put fish in there any time soon, especially stuff like joculators and black tangs. The dead stuff on there (even if you can't see it) rehydrates and will decompose in the water.
