Hi,
Question! As coralline algae grows and covers live rock does it not plug all the pores and holes where the different types of bacteria and other things are supposed to live? And if it does is the rock still considered " live "?

Thanks,

HI Frank,

I'm no scientist (though there are plenty here who are and might chime in later), but as I understand it, the bacteria inside the "pores" of live rock are either anaerobic or will be able to get what they need even with coralline covering the rock.

What the esteemed Ape said. Also, coralline doesn't cover the bottom of the rock or places where there is no light so it's all good 8)

I think your analysis is quite correct. and your concern is not warranted.

1) the algae itself consumes ammonia, nitrates, and phosphates with or without any bacteria acting.

2) Not all the rock is covered with algae only the lit portions. So there will still be plenty of unlit holes not plugged by the corraline.

You will be very, very fortunate if you have so much coralline algae that all visible surfaces of your rocks are covered by it! & by the time that happens, there will be plenty of bene's everywhere. Not to worry!
