I am about to redo my sump and would like to add a refugium. The sump is a 55g aquarium. Ideally, I would like the refugium to be a 55g aquarium as well. My question is this: Is there a way to safely get gentle water flow and water return between the 2 tanks if they are at the same level on the ground? The only way I can come up with is to use a shut off sensor but I'm worried about these failing. Any thoughts?

Are you talking about gentle water flow in the refug? If so some of our reef gods ( experts )would disagree with you but you can always tell them it's your tank and you can do what you want with it. Why not make your 55 gal. sump into a refug. all in one? Just an thought.

you can "tee" the drain so that some of the water goes directly to the sump and the rest goes to the refugium. then adjust un til you get the flow you want.

If you use a use a large enough diameter pvc pipe connecting the two, you should get the required drainage from refug to sump. After all the water level in the refug should be higher than then in the sump.
