Hi...
Is there anyone on the list that can put me in touch with Eric Borneman? His University oif Huston e-mail address is not valid any more it seems.
I appreciate you help.
best
Alf J.

I haven't seen Eric around at all in at least half a year (probably longer). He hasn't been involved in anything hobby-related in a while ... at least online.

Thanks to all for your information! Eric seems to be very hard to track and I'll think I leave it here for now...

Hi Alf,

Welcome to reefs.org - it's been a long time! I think we first met at WMC '96 in Seattle!

If you would still like to speak with Eric I've sent you his telephone number by Private Message.

Cheers

Well, it looks like he hasn't made any kind of public appearance (in the aquarium hobby context) in at least a year. Though it might sound obnoxious coming from me (given that, a couple years ago, I zealously campaigned against his merit/reputation as a researcher)... but I do hope he "comes back" to the hobby. Despite his apparent blunders and spotty attempts at controlled research, I still think that what he originally had to offer the hobby is still what he has to offer... delightfully astute, entertaining and informative musings and observations on reef keeping. I wonder if his absense was promoted by a failure to obtain the PhD he had been seeking for almost a decade. Many universities in Texas have a 10 year time limit on any PhD program, and so he may have just run out of time. I think it would be unfortunate if that were the reason he has "left" the hobby. It seems to me that most people who are considered successful aquarists don't have PhDs in marine biology. I'm certain people would still read his articles even if he's not officially a "scientist." They've been doing so since 1998, before he even started his PhD program.

But, of course, I'm speculating as to the reason for his cyber absence. For all I know, he was kidnapped by aliens or maybe he went to live with the Amish. Or, maybe he just wanted to leave in a shroud of mystery for the poetic effect... I've always been a fan of such exits myself.

So it never was all about the corals. :D

How about you leave the poor guy and his reputation alone? I think we all wish Eric the best regardless of what he's up to nowadays.

+ a million

There is a story about Eric that is hitting the forums. I hope we can all respect another human being and reef keeping enough to not turn this into yet another feeding frenzy.

Agreed. The timing is really strange, but I did not hear about Eric's recent news until after I made that post. It's even more true now.

If anybody is curious what we're talking about it's covered on the Advanced Aquarist blog.

It's really sad :( I really hope he's alright and seeks help with whatever difficulties he's facing.

It was really hard for AA to post that blog, but I knew rumors were going to fly this week, so we decided to present just the facts.

When I was first getting into the hobby, I bought a book by Eric Borneman and Ed Puterbaugh "A Practical Guide to corals for the reef aquarium." That was in 97' and it although was a basic coral I.D. and care book really got me into the reef scene. I am sure Eric has had a positive influence on many aquarist over the years.
