This is confusing. It may actually be easier to build but it looks harder to harvest the algae to export nutrients. And size seems like it would be an issue, as well as algae deposits on non-harvestable surfaces.

I guess I need pictures of it in use to understand why it would be better, or even as good, as more traditional designs.

Seems reasonable, seems like the main problem would be keeping snails and other herbivores off it.

I set up an algae scrubber in 1978- a giant glass jar full of large pebbles that circulated water from the tank with a pump in the bottom and illuminated by a gooseneck desk lamp. Should have patented it. :lol:

Yah, light penetrating glass = algal growth on glass = less light and non harvastable algae.

Actually, is that a problem? Snails/Herbivores grazing on the algae is an export in many ways. Assuming they don't keep it totally clean of course.

What someone really needs to invent is an algae scrubber that can have multiple layers of screening. More surface area in a smaller square footage.

Not really- they just turn the algae into poop.

The great "poop black hole" nutrient cycle debate. I see SM has taken the "there is a nutrient black hole for poop, snails are it" position. That position lost horribly.

How are you cutting that flat edge on that, or are you going to make a mold for this?

I've been looking at these ATF's with interest for a while now and like the upflow design idea. Is there a reason everyone seems to use air to generate the current for these scrubbers? Couldnt a small power head be used in place of the air bubblers? As long as you have flow the scrubber should work the same shouldn't it?

It seems to me that the salt spray fromt he bubbles would cause excess amounts of salt creep and that by using a power head the direction of the flow wouldn't really matter so much as long as there is steady flow past the canvas.

You are trying awfully hard to sell something to people who know it fails long term. We have see the disasters that occur from ATS run tanks. We just aren't going to buy it now. I see nothing different about this "new modern version" that would warrant a re-look at a failed strategy to filter a tank.

You can keep trying but odds are good folks here are going to be very reluctant to touch.
