Well, after years of dreaming of upgrading my 80g FOWLR, I have ordered a Red Sea Max S400 system (100 gallons). It will be a great improvement, since my original tank was not even drilled. I have a HOB skimmer (Remora Pro), and a bare bottom. The tank is full of soft corals, and I currently have a false percula, a sixline wrasse, a flame angel, and lots of snails, a conch, and a pincushion urchin. All of the fish are at least 3 years old and the tank has been up for about 15 years.

I am thinking of a rough plan as listed below, and hoping to adjust as I learn more.

1) Set up new tank and seed with live rock from original tank
2) Add about 1" of sand and seed with live sand
3) Add more live sand and some rubble in the refugium are of the tank
4) Wait about two months for pod populations to stabilize in the tank
5) Add tank cover, diamond goby, and goby/shrimp pair to tank
6) Wait another month, and then move inhabitants from old tank into new system
7) Shut down old tank

Does this seem like a reasonable plan?
I am mostly concerned about step 5. Do you think two months will be enough time for critters to populate the tank to help feed the diamond goby? Is it prudent to keep a diamond goby AND a shrimp/goby pair in the same 100g system? These will be my first gobies and my first sand bed, so any additional information would be helpful. (Order to add, shrimp/goby pair suggestions, substrate suggestions)

I am continuing to read online, but having a second set of eyes looking at my plan would be helpful. Can't wait for this new tank!

That is a very very patient plan and should be just fine. I would cycle the lights normally and run pumps normally during this process. If you dont have the power or flow pumps then minimize lights to minimize algae that will normally grow.

Otherwise watch it and ensure you have snails etc that you need to control normal new tank cycles.

You probably can speed thing up a little without problem. Two months probably is not needed in step 4, and you probably can start moving things from the old tank to the new system when the pod population is established.

Good luck!
