Curious what the consensus here thinks about a debate ongoing with a friend of mine who will remain nameless so lets just call him Mr.X.

I am going to be starting a new build and I am looking at all options and one thing that interests me is the new abilities with the LED lighting and features. One thing being the ability to mimic thunderstorms. The debate is that this is just going to spook the fish and should not be used. I have looked at different videos online at people who are using this function and don't see the reaction of fear from the fish that Mr.X is implying.

Anybody here using this function that can weigh in on this debate?

To me it looks like a really cool feature but if this is something that will cause any stress to the actual inhabitants then i do not want to use it.

Thanks for any input!

here is an example

Well, i think it's a bunch of baloney.
Purchase lighting to keep your photosynthetic creatures alive and happy. Purchase LED lighting to save on electricity and make the corals pop. Make simulated lightening storms for what? Are you going to have the goofy thunder sounds too? What about whale song? Here....Play this for your corals and fish!

I wouldn't be worried one bit. Of course I wouldn't spend extra money on such a feature either. :D

while its been shown that simulating moon cycles can cause both corals and fish to spawn/mate I, personally think simulating thunderstorms is purely aesthetic - you're not going to simulate rainfall are you?
The fish would probably get used to it, but really, what use is simulating TStorms?(my fish in my FOWLR react when I turn on the desk lamp near their tank, so I imagine it would take the fish a bit of time to get used to the simulations, as would myself and family having a strobe like effect flashing periodically- that would prolly annoy me to no end while I'm playing video games or watching a flick)

I'm still in the process of collecting all the equipment for my 65 gallon reef, and I do plan on going LED for the lighting, and will have a controller(for sunrise/sunset/moon phase), but as far as TStorms, I dont see any real need for it, so I wont be adding it into the programing/sketch

Interesting topic.

There is sort of an ongoing debate that camera flashes at public aquariums can disturb or stress the animals. I really can't say one way or another whether there is any merit to this, but the folks who keep certain really delicate fish (like sea dragons) will swear by it. On the scale of things that really matter (in the context of fish health), I'd place it way below water quality, food, tank environment, and nutrition.

My feeling is that if you are that hard core about fiddling with your tank you are probably the type of person that is keeping your animals happy and observing them very carefully. If you notice something that seems abnormal, just turn the feature off. :D

I would think that corals would benefit from some varying light intensities during the day. (oe. clould cover). It sure varies in nature. I think the fish could care less.

I'd like to add this feature to my 24G nano. Its a pricey feature though. Is there anything new out the cheaper than an Apex or RKL?

other than building a controller yourself(Typhon project), I havent seen any

I don't think corals would be effected by cloud cover. It's all about the process of photosynthesis. As long as they are getting enough usable light in a day to accomplish that, they will keep going.

Personally, I would use a Van de Graaff generator.

I feel strangely at home in this thread.

Wooaa!

I hope I didn't commit avatar usurpation. If I did, sorry! I can get rid of it.
