You need a salinity standard. The standard will come at say 35ppt. You put some on your refract and with a small screw driver adjust it. The blue white line will move so you just put it to 35ppt. Some say you can use tap but I don’t trust it. Standards are only 5$

Yup, Refractometer calibration fluid. Brs probably has it. I use bright well and one other in a white bottle. If do you use rodi just adjust with screwdriver to 0. You might need to try different lighting If everything still looks the same.

You need 35 ppt calibration fluid when you get the fluid put the fluid drops on the front lens close the top on the front lens wait 2 min look into the back lens and while looking thew the lens use the small flat head screw driver to line the blue line up exactly to 35 ppt “when you look threw the lens “ppt” is on the right side” then you should be ready to go “ always remember when ever you finish using the refractometer you should clean the front of it with rodi to get rid of any left over salt water for accurate readings”

Use rodi water
Do not do that. There are plenty of explanations about why you should always calibrate an instrument with a solution close to what your expected readings are.

Likewise when you calibrate a pH probe you use the 7.0 and 10.0 solutions for a reef, not the 4.00 and 7.0 ones.
Side note: had very bad results with the Pinpoint ones (even when keeping them in a sealed plastic bag to avoid evaporation, I would get very different readings from 2 brand new bottles). Now I am using the BRS one.

Everything you need to know about refractometers and calibration is here: http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-12/rhf/index.php
