It’s illegal to take it, if you get caught the fines are through the roof. If you buy anything coming from the ocean make sure to have a certificate it’s fine to take off the island...they’re pretty serious about it.
When I was there I was told the same about Pele’s curse. Anyone who takes sand, rocks or anything native of Hawaiii off the Island will have bad luck and besides it’s illegal with heavy fines...LOL
but the diving was unbelievable especially for us reefers .....a yellow wall of tangs, moorish idols, huma triggers etc...

No rocks are allowed to be removed from there. It's part of their coral protection laws.
No live corals are allowed to be removed, which means no coral skeletons either, since you can't prove it was dead, therefore no dead corals nor the rubble either.
When I go to Florida though, I bring back 50 pounds of sand and or rocks every time. There it's just local construction materials.
Just for future reference for anyone going to hawaii. Enjoy and leave everything as you saw it. Share the memories and pick another souvenir (no rocks, sand, coral or this or that).
