I encountered a problem yesterday when I got home from work, walked into a cloudy mess with a few corals dead and a royal gramma. I also noticed the snails at the top of the tank. Of the corals it was a huge bubble and some lps I lost. Some back story, I have a crew working in my house redoing the kitchen and I’m not sure if the power was turned off then back on by the time I got home. Crew says the power was never lost unless there was a trip and nothing seemed switched on the circuit breaker plus the clocks were still right. Crew was working in the house for 8 hours by the time I saw the tank. I didn’t check on it before work. Protein skimmer air hose to pump was clogged not producing bubbles. No overflow of the cup. Trying to figure out what caused the issue. Did a water change a week prior.

Here’s what it looked like yesterday, I did a big water change so hopefully the rest of the fish and corals make it but this morning my wife said it still looked cloudy

From what I was told, it would take at least 12 hours of no power to start losing stuff. Anybody have an idea on the cause? Skimmer was out of commission 2-3. Days max, my feedings were light. No anemones died

I did a large water change, I changed about 20 gallons last night and another 15 this morning at 3:30, also added new purigen and chemipure to the tank so I’m really hoping I can salvage anything left. I had this happen to me one other time with a large power outage and 2 clams died

Try to keep everything the same as it was before the crash. No sudden changes!!!

Inspect all your equipment and make sure there’s no malfunctions.

Replace your sponges or any type of filtration you’re using in your system( do not replace your bio media)

Add some carbon to you tank for a few day( usually throw some in a media bag and let it sit close to the return pump after your filtration) it’ll eliminate any substance affecting you system.

Stop doing large water changes, 10%-20% max and test your tank daily. ( alk, calcium, mag, PH, salinity) if any of these are out of wack and not inline with what they were before the crash do not try to bring it up or down all in one shot. Do it slowly over a few days or weeks. This will alleviate stress on your corals and fish. As long as your parameters are in the ball park of the standard you’re fine.

Maybe someone accidentally or purposely poured something in your tank. Do you have a doser? Perhaps it malfunctioned. Big water changes actually do more harm than good because of the huge swings. I made that mistake when I had a crash

Thanks for your help, I’ll cut back on the water changes

I’m not sure what happened outside contaminate wise because I wasn’t home and don’t have a camera in my fish room. The contractor agreed to cover an loss of fish or coral. I don’t have a doser. Normally stick to weekly water changes

Joe sorry to hear, it could be many possibilities for the mini-crash but it sounds like the contractor has alittle guilt if he is willing to pay for the losses not related to work being done. The power has to be shut off to do all the wiring for the appliances, lights, outlets etc… It’s a lot easier to just shut the main feed breaker on the top of the panel then to try and find all the individual breakers for what you need…if they aren’t labeled….could explain why you didn’t see any breakers tripped. Also depending on your bio-load you can experience losses a lot faster than 12 hours. My tanks alk, oxygen etc..drops pretty quick.. I’ll notice a drop within an hour because I’m so heavily stocked. I could be wrong because he said he didn’t, but look to see if any new electrical work was done like fresh wiring, outlets etc…….
