These are sad questions. I lost my 3 year old 55 gal LPS/softie/fish reef aquarium in January after a blizzard related 5 day power outage. Have been trying to get whole house generator since then still to no avail and have decided to not set up new reef until assured backup in place. Finally broke down aquarium today. Have been amazed by lack of smell(my partner even more so). Stuck in house all day due to passing hurricane Ian so kind of a morbid irony. I have used tampa bay live rock and sand for both of my previous setups. It appears this is no longer the norm with most starts now with dry rock and sand. So now my question. Can I use my currently dead rock and sand in my future setup or should I just toss it all? Is there any benefit? Is there any downside?

Sorry to hear your loss! :(

I still use rock and sand from the 90s… clean it /pressure wash it, soak in fresh water… ready to go. If you want, add a couple of new live rock pieces.

+1, I'm still using stuff from the 90's also. I would definitely use some live rock and live sand when starting a new system. (Aquabiomics has an excellent article on establisihing healthy microbiomes with maricultured live rock.)
