Which invertebrates do you consider essential in a reef tank, if any?

Depending upon your setup I think you can by without any, but I think things like hermit crabs and snails can be important in a reef tank to take care of algae and cleaning things up. That being said, I like to have Serpent Star and Cleaner/Blood Shrimp in my reef.
