Hello folks,
I'm back in New Guinea and off to start in the first village tomorrow.
I bought one bundle of barrier netting material which is enough for the first village.
The source of it is a big netting/fishing supply house in Cairns, Australia.
All the collectors buy it from them and so will we.
One 320 foot bundle costs $350.00 and serves a village of 32 collectors...
320 divided by 20 feet = 16 ... 6 foot high nets. Then you cut em in half to make 32 three foot high nets.
Eventually we will need about 8 more bundles before we are done here.

Our survey team just found flame angels in 5 feet of water off East New Britain province and over a huge area. Golden angels were found in 10 feet off Milne bay and about 1,000 blue tangs in 6 feet in a place called Wewak.
the light touch that our net collecting training will instill will keep the coral intact and insure perpetual supplies.
We have had several high level meetings with officials this week and the overriding theme was about employing fisherman without breaking the corals.
Since cyanide is out of the question and not even an issue, our boogeyman becomes coral breaking and will not be tolerated.
The director, Dave Vosleer just flew back home and is now at the following address:
Donations earmarked for the net and gear fund should be sent there to him.
I'm off in the morning to start in the first village and will report back soon.
Sincerely,
Steve Robinson

Dear Jon,
Steve has told me a lot about the interest of the Manhattan Reefers Club in supporting our activities in Papua New Guinea through raising funds for our SeaSmart Fisher Net and Gear Fund. This is assistance will help us to provide the right materials to the fishers from the start thus laying out early a better framework for the sustainable development of this trade. In addition, your support will help us to stretch our funding even further allowing us to reach even more fishers.
On behalf of EcoEZ Inc. and SeaSmart International, I?d like to thank you and the Manhattan Reefers for your generous support of our efforts to build a sustainable, equitable and profitable marine aquarium trade in PNG.
Sincerely,

David

Hey guys
We are deep into the project now...
any idea where the donations went?
Dave at campaign central says nothing came in.
We have found blue tangs off the front of the harbor in Port Moresby and a new epaulette shark for the aquarium trade.
As I inspected it closely, it bit me on the rubber nosepiece and would not let go.
I was afraid of injuring it so it hung on there for about 15 minutes.
I got it off by just getting into the boat and letting it hang there ...in the air.
The bite was like visegrips....and surprising for so small a shark.
They are locally common and we see them every day.
The blue tang in 10 feet of water was a hilight and so near town!
The country is huge so this is a good sign.
I collected 2 with just hand and glove.
Steve in Port Moresby
