Jon from the CT Reef Society here-
Just joined your board to let you guys know about an event up in our neck of the woods that you might be interested in. I run a coral propagation project at the high school that I teach at in CT (E.O. Smith up in Storrs) to get kids to learn about corals, aquaculture and conservation. I am hosting a "Frag Farmers Market" at the school on June 8th from 1pm to 4pm, based on the idea of the vegetable farmers markets that you see around but with corals!. A bunch of local guys (and you too if you'd like!) are going to set up tanks at the school and sell their homegrown corals. We should have everything from mushrooms to Aussie Acans. I'm also going to run a raffle, with some nice corals and dry goods, to benefit the school project. Admission to the meeting is free to anyone who wants to come up. You can check out the 1200+ gallon aquaculture system we house at the school and pick up some nice stuff from some local "farmers." This is the firts year that we are running it but I'd like to make it an annual thing and get more and more participation from the surrounding states, sort of like what F+S does but much closer (and better!) If you'd like more details, or are interested in setting up a booth yourself, just shoot me a PM here, at Reefcentral (still Fitch4) and I'll give you more info. Thanks and I look forward to seeing some of you at the school in a few weeks!

Welcome to Manhattanreefs. What would help is if you would post an exact location in your thread. That way people could decide if it's close enough to attend. Also instead of PM people the details list them in this thread.

Also if you could post some pictures of you 1200+ gallon aquaculture system, I'm sure everyone here would be very interested in seeing it.

Wow Jon that is awesome. I'd love to find out more about your project. I too am very interested in using the hobby as a vehicle for education and have been working with a local NYC elementary school science teacher toward that end. Tunicata on the board here is also a science teacher bringing the hobby into her school. Very cool stuff.

lol Tuni beat me to it.

:D yes I did!

Lol, his threads are awesome. Can't wait till he posts them here if he has time. After looking at his school pics I was floored! The amount of partnerships/larger community backing for the projects are awesome

:brings out popcorn and awaits pics and MR folk responses:

Thanks for the tips, I'm a newbie here in your forum.
I was just trying to keep the size of the post smaller by saving the details. As far as setting up a tank goes, for a $25 donation to the school project, I will get you a tank (atleast 10 gallons, I have a few) heated water (not a heater though) if you want it, a powerstrip and outlets for your set-up. You bring your lights, corals, etc... I will be available earlier in the day if people want to set up their stuff earlier to make sure their critters are open and happy when the market opens.
The meeting is in Storrs, NE corner of CT, right on the corner of Uconn's main campus. If you decide to make the trip up, I will gladly steer you in the direction of some good food, or if you like good beer, before the ride home.
Let me know if you have any other questions, I'd be glad to help. I'm really just trying to make some connections between the areas reefers. Thanks again,
Jon

I knew I could fish you guys out if I posted! Good to hear you guys made it home okay Nick. My tank is nice but sitting in my garage right now, I need to get a bit of help to put it in before the meeting! Looking forward to seeing you up at the school, remind me, I owe you a frag or two for helping get my tank into the truck!
