Typically people change out after 8-12 months of use.
However, a great article by Sanjay notes that bulbs lost little output (~22%) over the course of 17 months of use. He also found that the spectrum of bulbs shifted to a less overall blue look, and that energy consumption increased as bulbs aged. http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2008/7/aafeature1
i change mine after 9 months. the bulb will light for a lot longer time, but your corals (sps) will not get the same intensity.
i think de runs hotter, more intense but cover less area.
