No surprise there. Very disheartening to see it in writing though. I can't see global warming stopping. As long as we continue to burn fossil fuel, we'll continue to heat up the planet.
I wonder if evolution will permit these animals to survive in warmer temperatures over time? We're not talking about temperature increases of 10-15 degrees. We're talking about increases in the 2-4 degree range. Can coral 'adjust' over time to these increases?

Even if they do adapt, the co2 emissions are getting higher which gets absorbed into the oceans. The PH of the oceans will eventually drop to a point where calcification will be hindered to the point where growth slows and their ability to bounce back from global warming will be prohibited.

The reef's are generally near the equator because its warm year round. Further up north will be colder which is not their environment. Also, the sun penetrates the strongest near the equator, plus the days vs nights are more balanced near the equator in the summer vs winter. All these do not hold true further north or south.
Yes, volcanic activity does add co2, but now its a combination of volcanic activity plus the co2 from the atmosphere both combining into the water. Perhaps the volcanic activity made the oceans reach an equilibrium and maintain the status quo, but the co2 adding from the atmosphere is pushing the PH in the oceans down from the status quo

What "man made" warming proves is that these creatures (all creatures) were created, yes created to work in a certain way. We have seen cretures wiped out of a forest because of man cutting down the trees to make room for farms and development. The same is now holding true for the sea as well - in this case - it's "Global Warming". Yes we are very ignorant when it comes to the truth. We human beings (mankind) are damagin the Earth because We are subjecting it forces that were not calculated into the natural order of things. To those that keep believing that this all just happened - I say keep it up - slowly but surely - you will destroy the Earth.

It all started eroding when the industrial revolution was born. I don't think any one of us would want to live our lives like the generations from the late 1880's and before lived. The comforts and conveniences we all have come to take for granted contribute to the continuing decline of the planet as a whole.
In order for us to reverse the effects of the cumulative damage man has done in the last 120 years is going to take even more technology and innovations. Nobody wants to 'go backwards' in our lifestyles. We just have to do it without each of us leaving such a large carbon footprint.
It's amazing how the earth has been here for 100's of millions of years. Man has been here for only a few thousand years. And it's really only the last 120 years (the Industrial Revolution) that all this damage has been done. Progress, advancements, technology, 'onward and upward'....... :sad2:

Not to say that I dont agree, because I fully do agree 110% with what is being said here, but it just irks me when people say "We are destroying the earth". We are not going to destroy it. It was here long before we were, it will be here long after we're gone. It has survived ice ages, meteor strikes, volcanos, tornados, earthquakes, hurricanes, and whatever other godly catastrophe has been slung at it. And it has always corrected itself over time. We are not going to destroy the earth, we are going to destroy OURSELVES. We are going to make it so bad that humankind will eventually fizzle out, and yes, we will probably take many species of plants and animals alike with us. But once we are gone, the earth wont give two craps about global warming or non biodegradable plastics and such. Humans are just a phase, and a very small phase considering the life of the planet. It will do as it has done many times before, it will correct itself over thousands of years and make itself ready for the next major lifeform that evolves and takes over as we have. And hopefully they will learn from our mistakes. Either way, the Earth will be here and it will survive, as it always has been, and as it always will be... awaiting the next phase of its cycle.

Mikey - you're comment seems directed at me - ok - no prob. But please please take out the word godly out of the comment - it's obvious that you don't buy in to that sort of belief system - so you're being contrary.
By the way - raping the ocean of it's lifeforms to stuff in a fishtank could never be considered helping nature out. I fully admit that guilt as an owner of a fish tank with fish and other creatures in it that have no business being caged it like that - also, Marine Biologist are doing nothing positive by sa called trying to help sea creatures - the ocean can take care of itself. Only reason why these biologist call themselves helping out is because mankind has caused the ocean the harm. in a nutshell I can agree with you on one thing - mankind is self derstructive. What I hate the most is the hypocisy that comes along with high minded people. I actually appreciate more the person who admits his/her guilt - than the one that tries to cover it with chivalry. All educated persons with PHDs typically qualify as the hypocrites. LOL And... yes we can live the way we used to - nothing wrong with riding a horse or working physically to make a living - nothing wrong with that at all. As for diesease - heck, we are still dying of them - some folks just prolong the process sometimes. Yada yada ya. Nuff said. i could go on for centuries with this crap.

Homo sapiens; which most of us are , are only on this earth 100,000 years. thats only a blink of an eye in the time of the earth which is about 4,600,000,000 years old.
the odds that we can take down earth with us is certainly very vein of us. its just a shame that most people will not acknowledge a problem unless its cause irreversible damages.

i totaly agreed with your post prior to this one. and i do sigh at the mass harvesting of corals. that why i must commend this site and members, people raising their own corals and fraging them. this realy does help the environment whether we want to believe it or not. each frag we make is one less polyp that will be riped out of the vast sea. marine biologist realy dont help the environment either. dont get me wrong they help us understand the marine wolrd but how many people can genuinely apreciate it to the point of making significant life style changes to help out the earth.

anyone watch the discovery documentary/show life after people? Basically if people were wiped out today it would take millions of years before all traces of mankind were wiped from the earth. But it would only really take a couple of hundred for the earth to correct itself.
