My Carbon filter of my RO/DI (The middle of the three containers - with the 'fish net' around it) gets orange and clogged up pretty fast - after say 200 gallons. anyone else have this problem? i use a 1 micron sediment filter and a 1/2 micron carbon filter.

Hmmm, this stuff always varies depending on your water source - I use a 5 micron filter and the same carbon block - and mine is just the opposite - bottom line, if your micron filter isn't dirtying up as fast, then what's being filtered is being caught by the carbon block - I would try different ones to see what best works for your water source.

For me, as long as my water tests under 5 on my TDS meter, I could care less how I replace the filters :)

Sounds like your filter is doing what you ask it to do - capture undissolved solids. Is the carbon block restricting flow (reducing pressure getting to the membrane?

If yes, and if you don't want it to clog so fast, put another sediment filter in front of it with an approximately = pore size. The cheaper sediment filter will capture the crud rather than the more expensive block.

I just get the cheap prefilters from HD. I use a 5micron before the block, and change it when it seems dirty. I don't keep track of gallonage.

I did decide to change my DI cartridge the other day. I had a colorchanging one that didn't ever change. So I changed it in inaguration of my 20.

There was algea growing INSIDE the RODI filter. No wonder I couldn't get a tds reading below 20.

After I changed it, TDS = 1

my TDS reads at 0, so thats not a problem.
I order my filters from Marine Depot (and get 15% off b/c i bought my RO/DI unit from them). the 1 micron sediment block is $5 and the .5 micron sediment block is $15. The .5 micron carbon block is $16. so it doesnt really pay to buy the .5 micron sediment filter, i'd rather replace the carbon one for the same price.
my color changing DI cartridge never changed color either. like you, i just change it whenever i feel like it. I also just changed my membrane (usually change it once a year). and the clogged up carbon block does restrict some flow (always produces more water faster when I replace it with a fresh one).

the math now:
i change the carbon block and sediment about once a month (costs about $20/month). The DI cartridge about every 6 months (costs $28) and the membrane once a year (costs $90).
So a 1 year supply costs $20x12 + $28x2 + $90x1 totals $386 x 0.85 (15% discount) comes to $330.
this is just under $30/month or $1/day.
