I have had a 92 gallon mixed reef with a 80 gallon sump and 27 gallon refugium built into the sump for about 3 years. I've maintained a 4 to 5" sandbed in the refugium using Kent Marine's Bio Sediment. I was thinking of changing the bio sediment to a mud type substrate. I've heard good things about the mud substrates in the refugium and I'm not sure how beneficial the bio sediment is.

I had some questions on doing this:

Does anyone have any thoughts on the mud substates for refuges? Is it OK to take out all the biosediment at once and put in the mud? I'm not sure if there will be a shock to the system (will it stir up the bacteria in the dsb in the refugium. How much mud should be put in the refugium? Are there any product recommendations relating to the mud products?

miracle mud is good and yes there will be some shock if you disturb or take all of your old subtrate at once. 1st take some off the top from the old and discard it, then partially mix new subtrate with the exising one.
