I have been missing quite a few fish recently in my 175G, 6 feet bowfront reef tank as shown on the following picture.

mini-80205051.jpg

A month ago, my mystery wrasse disappeared like a mystery after I have the fish for over a year. Couple weeks ago, among my 5 barlett anthias, two small ones disappeared. Two weeks ago, I put in two yellow watchman gobies, but I have never seen them again. I felt some problems, but did not pay too much attention. Yesterday, I put in 9 healthy, good looking fire fish, I saw them swim happily before I left the office by 6pm, but this morning, I found only 4 left.

Who is the possible killer?

I have a one foot long engineer goby, can it be the problem?

anthias tend to pick on the weak, do you have any other wrasses or fish that might chase the fish to jump? Have you checked the overflow boxes and the sump yet?

firefish could just be hiding, or died from disease...
mantis? ever hear any snaps, or cracks that are unexplained?

water parameters?

The firefish were just bought yesterday, it will last a few days if they have disease.

Haven't heard any snaps or cracks. Will mantis come out during the daytime?

Maybe a giant polychaete worm? Could have been growing for years in the tank and has just recently gotten large enough to wreck havoc. Try looking around with a red filtered flashlight at night and see what you find. Maybe put out some bait in a bottle trap so the fish can't get to it.

I have seen polychaete (bristle) worm many times when I moved the rocks, and some fish love eating them. Are you sure that they can be big enough to eat my fish?

Can the engineer goby be the killer for firefish?

I would think it's the engineering goby. Check out Paul-B's engineering goby thread.

Off topic here.
Oh, if you have time tomorrow come by Flushing Mall 5:00-8:00pm great show and if you can wait after the show, you can come to see some of my corals in the garage. LOL

Andy,

It's impossible. I checked the floor, nothing there.

I saw 9 fire fish by 6pm,Thuesday, and only 4 left next morning.Today, Friday, I only found one left when I arrived my office by 10am. Something has happened in my tank. The fish disappeared during the night.

Does engineer goby eat fire fish?

Wingo,

I have trouble to find your mentioned thread, can you help me?

Most likely, I will not be able to go to the show. Thanks anyway.

There was a thread on here a little while ago about someone who had missing fish issues. It turned out he had one hell of a hitchiker, an octopus. Did you put any new rock in lately? I would definatly look around at night with a red light as was mentioned earlier in the thread.
