Cancer Research Using Coral Extractions

Hi,

Sorry it took so long to notify everyone of the results. I have finally put a paper together summarizing the project. Basically, the crude extracts were found to have both anticancer and antibacterial activity. Four cancer cell lines (a breast cancer, prostate cancer, and two melanomas) were seen to have significantly decreased cell viability. Further research is being conducted to purify the extract and to determine the mechanisms of the natural product.

Hi, my name is Katrina Koon. I am a high school student from Stuyvesant High School and am conducting research on corals and cancer. The goal of my research is to find cancer cures (for cancers such as melanoma) originating from corals.

However, my limiting factor at the moment is not having enough coral. A professor from Hunter college assisting me with this research project suggested I have about .5 kg of coral. I am working with Capnella imbricata. Though the coral grows quite easily, I still cannot meet the suggested amount.
Would anyone be able to donate any Capnella imbricata or anything that looks like it? I will be using DNA to try and identify the corals.

Wow- high school for me involved collecting another kind of weed, studying Ozzy Osbourne Album covers, and playing my guitar for hours on end...I only wish I could have been doing something as productive and useful to society as Katrina is doing!!!

Wow. Have you begun to consider the most viable means of applying the purified matter to the cell? What kind of vessel are you considering for delivery? Have you thought about time-release methods to continually administer the material in to the cell area? Nano-tech combined with this would truly be phenomenal. I would love to see the results paper of what you have done so far. Outstanding work!

Hi again,

I just wanted to update those who are interested on my project. I submitted my project to three prestigious science competitions during the school year: Intel Science Talent Search (Nov.), New York City Science and Engineering Fair (NYCSEF)(March-April, I believe), and Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF)(June). I was one of the 17 finalists at NYCSEF who received a paid trip to San Jose to compete in ISEF. At the international level, I was awarded a third award in my category.

Currently, I am researching the possible mechanism of the extract. I will be continuing this research in college.
