Thanx guys but I really have myself to blame for this, and John for jinxing me. I have to say my best estimation is that whatever caused this was contracted at the initial time of the scratch since I had another scratch on my other thumb, exactly the same as this one and it is fine. I doubt washing my hands after the fact would have helped any since I was probably already inoculated the second the scratch was made. Whatever this was, the infectious disease specialist said this was VERY aggressive since the streak from my wrist to almost my elbow took only 2 hours to manifest.

Josh, they have me on 750mg cipro every 12 hrs. The streak seems to be pretty much gone and my hand and finger are almost back to a normal size. The pain is still there but nothing like it was. But now you have me wondering what you know about the cipro lol.

Sound very much like what I had.
Finger got a little swolen.
Within 2 hours, whole are was double in size, streaked in red, and I was running a 102 fever.

I don't remember the 3 antibiotics I was on, but Cipro def was NOT one of them.
The infectious disease people thought ultimately it was 2 things-bacteria marinum AND staph (staph is one of the fastest moving infections).

If you're improving, I'd imagine the drugs are working.

Def feel better.

Goldfrank is in fact pretty well know. If Jared goes to Bellevue though chances are slim that he will see Goldfrank directly. Often the ER is extremely busy and right now many of the first year residents may be the ones handling his case. If it doesn't get better then one of our MD forum buddies should put in a call for Jared:)

I know, its the toxicology dept that is world class.

surgical gloves aren't enough, they shred light toilet paper when you start handling live rock. I think a good pair of neoprene gloves is the answer. The goal is to prevent scrapes and punctures and latex isn't going to do that.

not cheesy. I wear these all the time. if i dont wear them, i got a box of non-latex surgical gloves every time i put my hands in

I meant the color...:splitspin...not the actual glove I have these as well...Like them alot... Jared...the hand area is quite robust and the good thing about these gloves is the fact that they are sealed up to your elbow...No water can get in or out.

I must disagree with regards to water not being able to get in.

I've owned and used these gloves for 15-20 years. The seal between the blue and orange is fair at best. It does ocassionally get a pinpoint hole at that juncture and will leak water into the glove. Still a very valuable 'tool' to prevent cuts and lacerations introducing toxic pathogens into our hands. However, they are not 100% waterproof and will definitely need replacing over time.

Russ,
How long did they last you before they leaked. I have had mine for a year and so far so good. BUt I see what you are saying regarding the seal between the glove and arm...

It's amazing how varied their longevity is. I've had them last anywhere from 3 months :sad2: to 2.5 years. I don't think I've ever had a pair go longer than that. Freaky, but now that we've talked about it, your gloves won't last much longer. Just one of those things.

I do recommend wearing them. And I do recommend replacing them when the leak becomes too uncomfortable. When they first leak, you'll continue to wear them. However, after some time they will begin to smell, and that's what always pushes me to get new ones.

Thane, those look like the "I'm getting ready to put some human remains in a vat of acid" gloves lol. I was just looking at some simple neoprene gloves with rubber grips on the palm and straps on the wrist so they won't come off.

I think we need to have a thread dedicated to information about possible threats in the tank. Not so much a public thread as just a list of stickies with information and what to look for as far as symptoms. This was a wake up call for me and I know there are probably a good amount of people on here who have never even had this cross their minds. It is very real and very serious.
