I bought a few fish the last time I was in hawaii, and the person (he didn't own a store, he dove and caught the fish himself) shipped the fish to me via overnight mail the day after I got home.

If you can buy fish or corals in a store in Hawaii you can have em here, its part of the us, Us fish and wildlife has no restrictions to hawaii, no permits needed, now taking something out of the Ocean well Thats something else ..Corals are not allowed to be taken from hawaii from what I understand, Inverts, fish and crustations are..

I think it might be legal to collect Zoa's if they are not on rock. But not much else. Jhart you are wrong. It is illegal to import corals from other locations into Hawaii and they are not for sale in shops. It is in fact illegal to have reef tanks as we know them here--there. It has to do with VERY strict State laws protecting the importation of non-native species into the state as wellas the collection of local flora and fauna.

Well, that sucks. There is a job opening in Hawaii that I am interested in. My younger brother took a job there recently and will be moving there after the fall. Now I have to think twice. LOL.

+1, I've been there, a few times, various islands, it may be a part of the US, but they don't want you to EVEN bring in a fresh apple on the plane, EAT IT OR LOSE IT, you go thru fish and wildlife, like an INTERNATIONAL flight. They are protecting PARADISE... thank GOD, someone is!

PSA: just because a coral is said to be from a certain location doesn't mean it's from that location. Often, stations located very close to the one being named are used to supply "Australian" corals, such as Timor... You get a lot more for an Australian coral than you do for the same piece from Timor. People are greedy and that is why you need to know who you are dealing with. The other side is that, the station might not even be the one to blame for the misinformation. It can just as easily be the guy standing in front of you looking to squeeze a few extra bucks out of you. Just a word to the wise.

wow, so they dont even sell corals in fish stores in hawaii? i wanted to to maybe buy some pieces and ship it back.
Not really many fish stores there,(check the yellow pages) you can hand-net moorish idols and blue box fish (and alot of other fish) by the jetty...without getting wet...locals can get, just about anything for free. No need to buy salt mix! Doesn't leave alot of profit in retail fish business.

...so i'm in Hawaii right now, on vacation, and as Prattreef has said, it is illegal to harvest corals here, and there are none for sale in any of the stores.

Many of the places where you'd find fish and coral here are protected - we are not allowed to take anything but pictures, or to leave anything but footprints. I think there will always be those who take when they are not permitted, but my understanding is that it is not allowed to take anything here without a permit, and the permits are not easy to get...
