A big problem with this hobby is the power of opinions. I understand what is being said as far as what is "reef safe" but you should have a clearer definition of "reef safe".

If someone comes onto MR and is thinking about putting a Moray Eel into a reef aquarium according to this FAQ you can't do it. But the fact is you can. You just need a large aquarium and the right tank companions. The eel is not going to harm the coral so yes I would consider a moray eel "reef safe".

also zebra Morays are extremely gentle and I've put them in tanks with small fish (3" or so) and have had much success keeping them in reef aquariums

just my two cents

Where to start

May I suggest that you start with an outline, it would help in several ways. First it would enable you to organize the information from the getgo. Second it would enable reefers to add information to the various sections as they wish rather than waiting for someone else to start the fact. It would also allow people to make their comments on sections rather than individual entries. This would keep the FAQ's more coherent. For example:

Lighting: Overview
Metal Halide
PC
Flo
Techical:
Frequecy
Spectrum
Watts
Lighting: Comments

I do not suggest this particular layout for lighing just wanted to display my idea.

My last thought is that you might want to set up a consistent scale (1 to 10) to rate various issues such as degrees of aggessiveness, being reef safe, and in lighting preference of use a a light source for a reef tank.

thanks joy,

we actually have a huge faq compiled behind the scenes, we are waiting for our next site upgrade to roll it out. there will be separate article pages and some other cool things.

This fish faq was rushed out due to the alarming number of posts pertaining to difficult to keep species being bought, or wanted by people who did not have the experience to do so. I asked Michael to help write it as he is one person who is an expert on this site when it comes to fish.

Fish Faq

All,

This is a cool idea! I am looking forward to doing some serious reading when the upgrade comes through!

A big problem with this hobby is the power of opinions.

I agree with this statement strongly. It is really important that folks be responsible about providing accurate information but it is equally important to emphasize that their experience may not be an absolute for all situations. In the past I was personally driven crazy by all of the apparent absolutes (you must have this to do this, or this can never work, etc.), until I realized that everyone's experience can be different.

This is not to say that there aren't certain things that are absolute, ex larger water volume = better stability, 2x flow is bad, etc

I updated the reef safe definition, see what you think.

there are no absolutes, your right, but there are definite guidelines and techniques that have been proven to work. that's what we want to make available for those starting out in the hobby. you need to start someplace so it should be with things that we all know will work.

anybody who would like to submit material for the faq is welcome to, it will be organized so all view points will have their say.

I'm just don't want to MR facts to become another place with incorrect information due to lack of proper explanations.

definitely not! We do not want to disseminate bad information,

if you ever see something that is wrong let us know.

As we will be drawing from our advanced members on this site and others, I'm confident that the FAQ will indeed be true and useful facts :)

Again we will be taking article submissions in the near future so if someone has an area of expertise they would like to write about just contact one of the mods.
