The OP was about clams dying from lack of light.
Mr. X. You can not know the conditions of Dukes,, lights out period. So arguing that cloud cover is the same thing as "lights out" is rediculous. Maybe he closed all the blinds in the room. Maybe he did cover the tank with a blanket.
By your theory of Ambient light. None of our corals would survive witout rest from the light source. So in that case,. When the timer turns my lights out. 12:30am, and then the sun comes up @ 6:30. My tank is recieving the ambient light for over 12 hours.
Bottom line is ambient light does not light your tank that much, in most situations.
IMExperience, Cyano has died off from turning off my lights for 2-3 days. It did not come back yet (2mos.) and I did not do a water change right after.
So everybody's tank and, expriences are different. There are no definate answers to an individual problem. Many factors come into play. That is why things like Cyano are an ongoing battle in this hobby.

I gotta tell you guys everyone swears about RO water but cyano breakouts seem more popular at the forums than Avatar at the movie theather.

I use tap water and never had cyano in my tank. Well maybe TAP is not to blame for problems but a poor husbandry technique or simply lack of knowledge.

i actually did close my blinds and i taped dark construction paper on the right side of the tank where the light from the sun hits.i also sucked out all the cyano i could see before i did this and yes i did a big water change.i believe my problem is i havent changed the membrane and earth filter in my ro/di.i have changed the carbon and the poly filter.i also do not think that my 2 koralias have enough flow.i was going to get 2 more but the seller flaked on me.when i come back from vacation those are the 4 things i need to address.

cyano is a photo synthetic bacteria, like i said in a previous post light isnt the problem it doesnt help your situation and cutting off light doesnt get rid of the overlying problem as much as a cover up or temporary solution. Em tablets( a fresh water medacine) can also help get rid of cyano while you are solving the problem, just dont use it too much or your tank will develop a em tablet resistant type of cyano

Agree with everyone.
But you have to remove the dead cyano to prevent it's decomp sparking another outbreak. Also have to reduce the input to prevent future outbreaks.
One without the other is pointless.

The clam could have died from an extended period of darkness, or extreme cloud cover, weakening it and then the toxins released from cyano decomposing accelerated the end result.
