i have dosed my tank with maracyn 48 hours ago.the first dose didnt work so i added 2 more packets and it seems it may have worked.i just did a 15 gallon water change added new carbon and waited 5 hours and turned on the skimmer and its still going crazy.how long before the effects of the maracyn wear off to where i can turn my skimmer on.

It is an antibiotic and I am sure it will kill the cyano, however, I am not sure what else it will kill. You may have inadvertently killed off your bacterial filtration.

I recommend running as much carbon as possible ASAP as well as water changes.

Antibiotics of any sort should be used in a hospital tank and as a last resort measure.

i dont think that red-slime remover or chemi-clean use erythromycin. in fact i am pretty sure that neither company will divulge what the "secret" ingredient is in either one of those products. Marcayn on the other hand is a broadspectrum anti-biotic (basically erythromycin) that WILL nuke pretty much all bacteria in your tank, including the beneficial ones.

i am with the other posters here, prepare yourself for a cycle...

micro bacter7 u can use! do another 50% water change and add micro bacter7. double the dosage! also u can use nite out to add an extra enforcement. ive read this before but i never tried it. u will have to dose mb7 everyday for 1 week there will be a mini cycle so if u have a friend to hold ur corals i suggest u do so asap. fish will survive it but if u have expensive fish or rare fish dont take the chance and bring them to a friend!!

Hi James

I have used Maracyn for red slime over the past 10 years. It works and unless your tank is very new, your bacteria will be fine. The skimmer is doining what it supposed to do, pull out the maracyn and the dead cyano bacteria. Let the skimmer pull out the wet foam and think of it like a water change. It may continue for a day or two. It is important to get the dead cyano out either through this method or doing water changes since it is adding nutrients to your water.I don't think the carbon is doing anything for your situation.

Everything will be fine

Andy

Erythromycin when used at 100mg per 10g will effectively work for cyano and will not wipe out your bacteria bed *IF* you have a well established tank, meaning at least 8+ months old. Better if it was 1 to 2 years old. Basically this is a FW dosage that will knock out some of your gram negative bacteria but not all, hence the well established tank note. If your tank is relatively new, you don't have the quantity of the beneficial bacteria & even the low dose of erythromycin will wipe out the bacteria bed.

Well, You've been around here a long time.

I would remove as much cyano as possible by hand and add Phosguard and Chemipure, I run Fluval canister filters with both my tanks and that's it, no other filter media. I have a 205 on my 45 gallon reef and a 104 on my 30 gallon reef. My cyano issues are gone since then.

You can get a reactor but I got the Fluvals a lot cheaper. I paid $30 for both, a lot cheaper than reactors and pumps and they add a little flow to the tanks.

honestly for most cyano bacteria, i've found that leaving things alone and letting the tank establish itself has been the best cure for cyano. Starting up a new tank or changing over or redoing the sandbed has all caused red cyano blooms. Giving it a couple of months to work itself out has been from my experience the best solution. I hope it all works out, i've used the red slime remover a long time ago a few tanks ago and it does work well. let us know of your updates

my tank is over 2 years old.i know it wont destroy all the beneficial bacteria and so far my tank looks great.no cyano in the tank 4 2 days now.at first i thought it wasnt going to work i even talked to liandy and said it did nothing but time killed it off.i didnt start geting cyano till nov when i was over run.i did everything to try and rid it as stated in the cyano sticky and everything it said to do didnt work.so i went and did what my good friens (liandy) told me to do and so far so good.thanks andy.as for the skimmer, andy i have the valve opened all the way and it is still just pouring in.this is now 3 days and i cant put it on yet.i am going to do another 10gal water change today which will make 25 gallons in 3 days in a 50 gall.hopefully i can get my skimmer on point again.
