IMO make sure the substrate gets agitated enough by bottom dwellers and that there is enough flow to prevent accumulation and keep dissolved organic matter in suspension long enough to make it to the skimmer.
BTW.. another thing that works GREAT for DSB maintenance is Sand Dollars. Like lil remote vacuum cleaner robots they are the best for DSBs. BEtween them and Nasarrius snails my sand bed stays clean and aerated.
