I have 2 mp40w in my 120 they are rated up to 3000 per hour, so i have 2 dialed down half way... does that mean i have 3,000Gph of flow. i know it seams stupid but between the 2 mp40 and my return iam pushing 4000gph is that two much??

I also have two MP40s on my 110g sps/lps tank i run them same way u do and the corals like it, but it depends on what kind of corals u keep if its a softie tank than i would turn them down a bit

Who cares about the numbers - are the inhabitants of your system happy, showing normal behaviors and, in the case of corals, polyp extension? Do they look better with the amount of flow you have now or less flow?

GPH is a very rough brute-force approach to ensuring that people have enough circulation, but, like Watts per Gallon, it's also a very fuzzy measure. The Vortech's broad flow and draw patterns mean that it's really impossible to compare them to an equivalently-rated pump in the more usual powerhead style. Figure out what your animals like, and that's the amount of flow you need.

I dunno, most softies can take a comparative thrashing, and some even seem to like it. It's the really large-polyped LPS that you need to worry about. Soft corals generally have rather tough tissue, even if it's not a species that grows internal supportive spicules. The diaphanous, water-inflated polyps of scolys, euphyllia, and other similar species are the ones you have to worry about tearing themselves to bits.
