I have two small tanks one LED and One MH and love both- I only saturated the RB LED for 2 hours a day and it is s nice crossover especially for certain Acan and Neon Trumpet but my MH is equally brilliant for my frogspawn and RBTA- really just what you like

Hell I was excited getting my first Natural light fluorescent on my molly tank- i think I sold out then too

See, the problem is not LED technology, it's the way it is being used, primarily in retail. You can make LED's any color you want at home. But if you area coral seller, you want to show off that fluoresence and make them look amazing. As most people found out through, that is nothing like what the corals will look like under typical reef lighting. Per Sanjay, that far of a skew to blue is going to slow coral growth as well.

So LED=good, ultrablue=ick.

Plus they hurt my brain :(

that looks pretty purple to me, you sure theres no 420 actinics runing on these corals? I've never seen anything flouresce that green under 12,000k or even 14000k for that matter. I didnt think a 12,000k alone would color corals like that.

You can make a coral look any way you want. You are either using Photoshop to change the temperature, white balance and dispersion, or you can use these high end LEDs to color the corals to your preference.

People used to complain about Photoshopped coral photos, so now the retailers get more creative with the light to make everything attractive.

My take on this is just to increase my actinic photoperiod and add a whole moonlight period with straight blue LEDs. I can see all the different colorations throughout the day.

Obviously you need to pay attention to what you are buying to see how they presented the colors. If you don't have the ability to create the same lighting conditions, assume the coral will be brown in your tank, that way you will be pleasantly surprised if you see anything close to what you bought.

Alrighty since people are wondering where the LED people are...Here are some pictures of my tank...Im no expert photographer, as you can tell. But this is just 2 different settings on my camera, and you can tell one looks much bluer than the other. And when I look at my tank, it doesnt even look as blue as in the pictures. So who knows whats going on. Maybe all these blue pictures are the fault of the photographers, and photoshop. Just my 2 cents.

And BTW, my tank is decently new, but all the corals I have bought so far are loving the LEDs...(6 royal blue and 6 white). The main reason I made my LED fixture is so that I didnt have to buy new lights every year. Why would i spend 50-70 dollars per year on lights when I could build my own light that would last 5 years?

2 questions 1) Will the racecar actually do a 1/4 mile in under 15 seconds and
2) is the computer an xbox?
But seriously, if you buy corals online and aren't extremely confident of the source then you get what you deserve. Far too many lfs are going out of business because someone selling corals from their parents basement online has no overhead. Then when you have a problem or need advice/emergency service theres no where to go but online and pray someone can help you out. Personally I always ask to see the corals under some kind of "normal" light whether mh led or t-5. You can duplicate the effects of any spectrum except the extreme blue from all 3. For my taste I agree with the person who said they like their lights natural but loves to look at night under the led moonlights too. BTW I don't work for or own a pet shop nor do any of my relatives I just feel that these guys need our support and will only go online if I can't buy what I want locally .

Yo motor,
Yes, I was joking. I am a car guy too or else I wouldn't know how many seconds is or isn't fast for a 1/4 mile. Also I only purposely insult complete blockheads and from what Ive read of your posts you aren't so peace it was just a joke. BTW a decent digital camera with settings that are very easy to set(pictures on menu) is less than $200 even for a waterproof one(a good idea for in or around a reef tank).
