Hello I am a reef begginer with a 34 gal solana I think it would be a great idea for someone or some shop to give a diy tank build class from the stand to drilling the tank the lighting and sump/ plumbing. Just an idea because I wish I knew how.

Next demo during a swap??
(The sped up version, or a video version??)

Though you can find these things on youtube too (personal is better if you can get it, I understand).

A few of my students actually want to build tanks at the end of the semester. I told them I would research again since it's not something I've thought about doing for a while. These would be 10-20g tanks, they don't want them for aquatic reasons. We'll just be using glass, silicone and basic wood stuffs from home depot for the stand. Just a basic bones kind of thing.

Its not hard but its not that easy. Its easy for people that have built things before to make a stand or assemble the glass part of the tank. Now so easy for people who have never used power tools before or built anything.

Glass drilling, sump building or modifying, and plumbing i can see a class for without a problem but showing people with no experience how to build a tank and then have them build their 120g custom tank setup using a hand saw and a hammer is a is a different story. Thats alot of responsibility to put on someone thats teaching the class.

Just get someone that has built them before to help you build yours, your going to learn quicker and they will catch anything your gonna miss when building yours. Take a look at all the DIY places because theres alot of things there about building everything and anything for your tank. And just remember its quick to lose a finger at best using power saws, untempered broken glass cuts very very well so don't eat it or anything silly like that, and saltwater causes electrical fires and alot of money in damages so check your fittings. Safety first.

I had a friend of mine drill his own reptile tank a year or two ago, never used a power drill before. First he scratched the hell out of the tank trying to get the bit set in the glass then half way through his wrist twisted, the bit caught and shattered the pane of glass. He had to get 20 stitches as a piece of glass flew at his face 1" from his jugular.

I don't think the OP was looking to build a TANK..he was looking more for instructions on set up, plumbing and drilling :)

Yeah but haveing someone show you in person and explain how and why things work so you understand them is alot better then watching a 10 min clip on u tube I don't get how these high tec setups work

You have to start somewhere... It's easier to watch a video hundreds of time before you get courage, then to watch someone in person and ask them to repeat it several times over, leaving you on your own afterwards.
You can rewind/replay a video... can't rewind a speach in person.

Yea, just seems lazy wanting someone to show you something like that instead of taking the time to do your own research.
There are so many different ways to put a tank together and so many ways not to. Someone showing you will not teach you how you would want to put one together, just how they would put one together. That may not work in your case.
YouTube has tons of how to videos. And you can mentally deconstruct other tanks that you see in LFS or other reefers. Ask questions and research. How do you think everyone else figures this out. If that is too much then hire an aquarium service.

I say watch and learn on your own pace.

Tons of videos online - and tons of tanks at the store for you to go through and examine.
Easier to find what you like, and what can work for your situation. :tub:
