yesterday I tried feeding my tank some of the brightly colored sushi fish eggs. we had a sushi making dinner party so there were a ton of fresh ones bought at a japanese market near me.

the fish went crazy chasing them around the tank, the hippo tang did not stop till they were all gone. does anyone one know if these are good for the fishies to eat? can I consider this a nutritious meal for them?

Jonathan,

I don't know much about sushi fish eggs. My only concern would be any additives they might have. If they are imported from Asia, you can't have a lot of confidence that any additives, preservatives, or processing ingredients are acurately listed on the label.

Otherwise, I would assume they are a good source of protein.

I agree. I would say they'd be very nutritious, but the potential for preservatives and other additives is likely very high. Remember, these eggs are meant to have some kind of shelf life (preservatives).

I also don't think that feeding them the one time will have any negative effects, as long as your tank isn't a pico or a nano! lol. (I'd guess you don't have a Hippo in a pico or nano).

if humans can eat perservatives and additives, wonder can fish eat it also?

Not sure. We have livers and kidneys and organs that process crap. Not sure what the anatomy of a fish is. We also drink alcohol and I wouldn't think to saturate my fish in whiskey, like I have :shocked1: .

fish should have livers and kidneys and most of the other organs humans have. Maybe the fish can only handle small amounts of alcohol because of their small body mass, much like how humans get alcohol poisoning after a while. :knockedou Doesn't the dry food or flakes we feed to our fish have some kind of perservative as well? Those must have some kind of self life as well

Good points noodle. What about rinsing the sushi eggs in RO/DI water before putting them in the tank. Similar to the nasty gel in the frozen Formula 1 that adds undesireables to our tanks. Experts say to strain the gel out before feeding.

additives and colorings aside, they are probably very nutritious. an egg is basically all stored energy that the embryo needs to develop, right? at least whenever you see videos of coral or fish spawning in the wild, it is feeding frenzy time for everyone.

kool so i got a new plan for tonite give my fishies sushi eggs and get em plastered. lolz im J/K imagine fishs drunk swimming into the glass hahahaha. thats funny.

 what you talking about? these are sushi eggs, not saki eggs, lol.

sushi eggs are not alcoholic, unless your keeping yours in a jar of vodka.

the eggs we got were packaged in an open container, there were no ingredients listed, just a price, like if you were buying produce or meat.

the fish seemed to go crazy for them, so I'll give it to them a few times a week as a little fun treat, minus the alcohol Tony is going to give his fishies :knockedou :P

Actually, (and seriously), Samsky fed his tank salmon roe, he got from a Korean store. I haven't been able to find it, but I think it's seasonal. He freezes it, it comes in a pint take-out container, and squirts water on it over the tank to defrost some and feed.
I'd get plenty when it's in season, it's straight fish eggs, and freeze a bunch.
