brooklyn peeps, get by on carbon + resin only?

Hi, I've been out of the hobby for 2 years and jumping back in sometime next month. But my moral conscience has always made me uncomfortable with the exorbitant amount of waste water with RO membranes. Now, I live in Brooklyn and out reservoir source is supposed to have low TDS. Do you think i can get by on carbon block and 2 DI resin canisters only? Anyone doing this in brooklyn and getting near zero TDS at output? I am doing FOWLR this time around. no corals.

Yes you absolutely can, I've been doing it for years. It isn't as cost effective for sure, but water quality is not an issue.

hey prattreef, thank you so much for your reply. I had a feeling it would be ok but the doctrine of RO only has been instilled in my head for so many years. I just needed an ok from a fellow aquarist... hehe thanks so much again

I run 2 micron filters ( nyc water is low in tds @ 30 or so, but very heavily sedimented) then carbon and finally DI resin. I get roughly 150 gallons out of a DI charge, and buy resin in bulk which def. cuts down the cost.
