So we just moved into our new condo, and put a 40 gallon tank up. It's small for the room, and she agreed. I told her that since the filtration I have is pretty crappy, how great would it be if we got a 125g or 150g. That way I can have it drilled and the 40 would go underneath as a refugium. My incredible wife agreed without any question. Now come the questions.
Looking at the basic size charts, we can go 125, 150, or even 180. Is 180 too much tank for a 40 gallon fuge? I really have no idea.
I have about 40 lbs of live rock now, so I'm thinking that I have to pile some rock into the tank over the coming months. This is going to be an investment that will take place over time with saving cash and buying gear over time. Luckily, I took this tank thing really slow, and only have 2 clowns, a few snails, and two shrimp in it. No coral yet.
Anything input would more than be appreciated. Thanks everyone, but especially my wife.

for a while i had a 240 gallon with a 40 gallon sump. After the skimmer, heaters, and return pump there was very little space for macro, atleast in any amount that would serve for nutrient export for that size tank. if you have a separate sump however, the 40 would be a perfect size for a fuge.

I once had a 150 and wished I had went 180 for width purpose. Once I move again and have the space I think I'm going to go with a custom tank. It's all about getting the right dimensions for the layout you have in your head. Of course and the fish and coral you want to make happy. I would also next time around probably plan he equipment before I even think too much on tank size.

if u get a tank with an iron stand ull have plenty of room (6x2x3ish) to work with, so u can piggyback a 30 tall as a fuge next to ur regular sump, which could be the 40g.

I like the Marineland Cube tanks. Very clear glass and they are wide and deep for their height. If I had a wife like yours I would have one already.
The 40 could be considered just a fuge. For efficient nutrient export the fuge should be as large as you can go.
Post your progress. I would like to see how it goes.
