I do not have an aquarium but I plan on having one in 2-4 months. This frag swap thing seems like a good chance to find some really great frags/corals that I will not find most other times.

If someone has the room for a few corals and has a very well established aquarium, I would be willing to make some sort of deal with you. I wish I had friends in this hobby. I barely know anyone in the city, let alone reefers!

Jeremy )

Or Maybe we could do a barter. I am a professional photographer with great lenses (and macro lens) and could take some seriously professional images of your setup.

I dont know if this is a good idea, it kind of leave open a chance for you to waste alot of money on a coral you have no way of knowing how its doing or if the person can be trusted, i'll hold of if i where you till your tank is cycled, there will be lots of opportunities for some nice stuff, we have some great vendors on here.

So you set up in about 4 months, wait another couple months, before you can add coral, and guess what...you're just in time for the spring swap!
Come to this swap, meet people, get ideas, save your money... you've got plenty of time to get 'great deals'.

There are tons of great people on this forum and I'm sure someone will be willing to hold them for you. If my tank were bigger and more established I would do it but what would happen if the tank crashed or the coral simply refused to live?

Save your money. You can always find good deals on MR (just check the marketplace forum) and the next swap will be here before you know it. Plus if you know what size tank and type of corals you are going to get it might be a good idea for you to start buying some of the dry goods you'll need - skimmer, light, etc. You could start cycling your live rock... There are so many things to do in preparation.

Don't worry about friends, mr welcomes you.

Best to slow down and learn what you need to know first, get a tank & cycle it, then decide what corals & fish you want to keep. A reef tank should be well planned out in advance.
We have 2 swaps per year and as mentioned if you do things correctly, your timing will be perfect to purchase things at the next swap.

I couldn't agree more with the majority here. You've got experience in the hobby, but as stated you'll have an opportunity to score more great deals at the spring swap. Nothing that you'll see at this swap is so unique or rare or hard to find that you won't find it at the next swap. Besides, if you're thinking you might miss out on certain livestock at this swap, just think of all the livestock you've missed at the previous 10-15 swaps we've had. Whatever is out there now will be out there in April 2011 also.

The best attribute you can personally possess in this hobby is patience.

See you Sunday,
Russ

lol, I just want to get the ball rolling and I wasn't aware of the spring swap. My goal is to do a ton of research for the next 2 months to make sure I know exactly what it is I am buying to do this right. Then I plan on introducing cultured live rock and sand. I think if i wait a month, the population of copods and little critters will be optimal and then I can introduce the corals and fish. So, my setup will be ready after xmas...that is a long ways away from a spring swap. It would be nice to have a couple of corals like I am adopting a baby. Everynow and then I could get pictures and visit to see how they are coming along, lol

I am only after soft corals for the inntial phase of the tank, so it would only be zoo's and possibly a finger coral. No hardcorals for at least the first few months. Besides, zoo's grow so rapidly that if placed properly they will sometimes drop polyps or fissure onto adjacent corals. Plus, I am willing to do some barter of photography or something else. I can give you some rocking images of your setup and closeups of your "babies"
