So I remember reading yeaars ago that people cant contract any diseases from fish except for bronchitis. I tried researching this recently and couldnt find anything on it.

Two weeks ago I was working with my hands in the tank removing some pesky algae growth. That night and next two days I was bed ridden with bronchitis. Not only that but the two people that were in the room with me at the time were hit with the same exact thing later that night. I didnt think it had much to do with the tank, but I made a mental note.

I completely recovered after that. In any case, tonight I was cleaning some more of that algae out of the tank and I am feeling the same exact thing creeping up on me as last time.... I never knew if that little fact about contracting bronchitis from my fish tank was real....

I was just wondering if anyone ever caught bronchitis from their tanks, either freshwater or salt. Just trying to figure out if there is anything to do for the tank so this doesnt happen again.

Any input is much appreciated!!

lol I never heard of such a thing..I have definitely gotten a headache after cleaning a nasty tank but never anything serious. I would suggest investing in a pair of those reef sleeves from coralife. I got mine cheap from Russ of Saltwater critters like 2 swaps ago, I believe he keeps them in stock.

I got to get me a pair of those - I usually a pair of rubber dishwashing gloves but they dont come far enough up on my arms, and so water gets into the glove from the opening further up my arm.

Im also thinking it might have been an allergic reaction to one of the corals in my tank. Im suspecting the pink palys that I have... my second guess would be these green/brown button polyps i have (not sure of the ID). I read up on symptoms of palytoxin poisoning and it mentions chest pains and asthma like symptoms, which is basically what me and my doctor were calling bronchitis... freaking palys - im thinking of getting rid of them

I don't know about "catching bronchitis from fish", but I got an upper respiratory infection after cleaning an old tank. Sounds relatively similar to your experience. Anyhow, I definitely recommend getting gloves.

Palytoxin kills in minutes, so I don't think that you weren't exposed to that... my initial thoughts were the same though - the symptoms are similar, so I wouldn't be too surprised if there was some kind of connection.

Yeah I need to get a pair of gloves, I'll PM Russ to see if he has any.

I dont think it was a full blown dose of palytoxin (which of course isnt much, about ~5 ug) but I still think I got a slight whiff of it. I say that onyl because last month I was trimming some paly growth for one of my feather dusters since my palys were shading it, so i think some mucus got dissolved in the water and my skimmer didnt pull it out of the water column.

Dont have a mold problem in the room, but would make sense if I did.

It just all comes down to wearing gloves.
