Too much copper can kill fish. Some fish like tangs are also somewhat sensitive to it and thats why it is recommended that they are treated with lower dosages. Sharks and rays are known to no like copper either. But i don't think its copper since his tank was able to keep freshwater fish alive.

The glass covers on top of the tank that greatly reduce oxygen levels as well as minimizes light when you add corals..although it helps with evaporation you are better off running it open top for better oxygen exchange. Or you could always add a bubble wand or some type of aeration device to help w/ that if you insist on having the covers on.

As far as "I am adding more fish on the 14th so if you want them to live then help me" is a pretty asinine remark. That's like holding a gun up to a cat and saying "help me or the kitty gets it!"

Seriously stop being a baby, you are killing fish for no reason because you don't know what the problem is and it frustrates you. You claim to have had several tanks before yet this is happening? Whatever sometimes things happen, just move forward.

OK NEW PLAN:

DRAIN the tank COMPLETELY.. all the water. Even the last few gallons on the bottom and your sump. All the bottom water is the filthiest as someone else mentioned.

Start fresh and watch closely. Test periodically for the next few weeks. Then if all readings are ok add 1 fish

I forgot to mention that you should probably still tell us the what type of test kits you use and to check the expiration dates on them. Most serious fish enthusiast have a few test kits on their own so that they can constantly monitor their tanks. A lot of us even use monitors for that purpose.

I would suggest you buy a poly pad or 2 and run them for a few days. If theres some sort of chemical thats left over from the switch that should help pull it out. Retest your water and if your parameters still come up zero try again. I would have to disagree with most who say damsel are indestuctable, yes its true once you have them they are very tolerant of poor water conditions but that is only after you have had them for awhile. Being the owner of a store I can tell you that quite often most of damsels brought in die within a few days so its possible you just purchased bad fish.

throw a few dead shrimps in there fomr the super market, up the temp to 86 and give it a few weeks. Its like everyone says, your tank isn't cycled yet. Also how are you acclimating fish? I find that is one of the largest issues with new converts.

dont do that that will only add more nitrites because there isnt enough bacteria in the tank to break down the waste of a few hardy damsels, let alone a few shrimp from the supermarket... like i said in an earlier post go to lfs and ask them to squeeze out dirty filterpads to add that to your tank

The shrimps is for the purpose of adding more ammonia so that the bacteria has something to feast on as they grow. The bacterial cut in a tank can only be as high as the amount of bioload that they are allowed to feed on are available.

your tank is not done cycleing yet.

Thank you for this post. I wish I read it BEFORE I listened to a friend and used the 4 damsels to help cycle the tank. But, as of now, I am lucky because my damsels are doing great.

Thank you for the information in your post, it is greatly appreciated. Ever since I started on this site, I check everything BEFORE I take the next step. I'm in no rush to kill ANYTHING, let alone fish.

Thanks again for the article. It was such a big help. :)

YOUR BIO LOAD WAS TOO GREAT FOR SUCH A YOUNG TANK...WHEN I STARTED MY 90 GALLON IN NOVEMBER 1010...IT TOOK 8 WEEKS FOR MY CYCLE TO FINISH(MEANING ALL LEVELS WERE AT 0),YOU HAVE 240 GALLON PLUS 55 GALLON SUMP...YOU GOT A LOT MORE WAITING TO DO... YOUR CYCLE WASN'T FINISHED.ALSO ITS GOOD TO HAVE A POUND OF LIVE ROCK PER GALLON.....THAT MAY BE WHY YOUR CYCLE ISNT FINISHING...TOO MUCH FISH WASTE AND NOT ENOUGH GOOD BACTERIA....SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS....
