If you want to look up, there are about 100 threads on this topic...
But for my quick opinion, I use them because they are simple, do not fill up room in sump, most other pads don't pull everything out and hold nitrates. Plus once those pads are shot, you throw them out. Socks can be bleached and cleaned and re used over and over. And for about 5 bucks each, how can you go wrong

I use 100 micron socks.....Yes i have to change them every three days but my water is clear and it takes 30 seconds to change. Great way of keeping alot of crap out of your sump.

i use 4 socks in my sump, i change them once a week. the collection of debris alone is worth it.
