thanks jbanks useful stuff.what about using the ph probe from the RKL.i heard there is a way to set your calcium reactor to the controller and if ph drops below a certain point the RKL will shut down the calcium rector.is this correct.if so would you happen to know how to set this feature.

Glad to be of assistancce. There are many here to provide pointers and help as others have already done. I agree with the others in that yo should read asmuch as you can and alwyas remember that a CR or dosing Kal is there to maintain the CAL/ALK balance and not to buffer it.. So, when you do get going, make sure your parameters are where you want them. Either solution of both will help you to keep those values stable.. Again, best of luck and come back to ask questions if you have them.

Just as as a pointer, which you probably already know. Make sure your Magnesium is in the 1300 range when you get started.. With out it being in the proper range, you will have a dificult time keeping your Cal/ALK levels with a CR or dosing kalk...

That is correct. You want to your cal and alk to be where it needs to be before starting your CR. However you do it, Cal and ALk should be dosed in equal amounts unless one is drastically off and that may have to do with something else that needs to be corrected like your magnesium level. Testing daily is a good way to help stabilize your levels..

This is a good article for calcium reactor. http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2002-05/sh/feature/

I have used a calcium reactor/kalk comb and dosing 2 parts. There are pros and cons with either method. Dosing 2 parts is easy to achieve your desired level of Cal and Alk quickly. And using one of those medical pump, you can dose continuously at small amount to avoid spikes in your levels if you are to use the peristaltic pump on a timer. For me, the calcium reactor is better because I would need to spend a lot of money on 2 parts for my tank unless I want to DIY which I got tired of after a while.
