If I stick with 150 Watt MH, would you recommend using 20k or 14k. Since my light is closer to 10k right now, to avoid light shock to the animals (SPS, 5 inch maxima clam, chalice), should I start moving the lamp further away from the water surface for now, and when I get the new bulbs keep it closer to the water surface?

Your corals are going to need more light than a 20k can provide. The Phoenix 14k is a great 'mixed spectrum' bulb. It provides a great daylight and deep sea blue. IMO it is one of the best bulbs for growth AND color.

I'm curious to the outcome also as I have had 2 MH fixtures. One from Current and 1 from Blueline. The same bulb used in each (Phoenix 14K). The phoenix in the Current was WAY too blue for me. The same bulb in the BL was an amazing color just as Russ describes.
