Not true at all actually. The number 1 rule is better safe than sorry. Big deal a worm could be beneficial to your system..or it could be a nightmare just like crabs.Never throw unknown creatures into the toilet, or let them lose in any way. It is possible that what you release could cause problems in local waters.
The caribbean is in trouble with lion fish, and many local fish are being overwhelmed with lionfish and may be wiped out b/c people released lionfish into non-native waters

As far as lion fish people letting them loose has nothing to do with the problem. It's other bodies of water merging that has brought them everywhere. You are thinking more like snakeheads which got released by people causing a similar issue in bodies of fresh water.
