If there was no money to be made from the reef, they would have more reason to leave it alone, instead of plunder it, no? Sure, taking care of somthing because it is profitable makes sense, however capitalism without regulation is short-sited, myopic, and the most profit means the most plunder--all short term as is characteristic of greed---the driving force for such a system.

Leaving the reefs alone is not an option for most island nations. It is not like many americans and their forests. We don't go out and hunt our food. A lot of the food consumed by the average joe comes from the reef. A lot of the building materials come from the reef. ETC.

A better option inmo is to make the LIVING reef a valuable commodity.

'Kay first...this post seems lost in political directions from which it did not begin...I have confidence in Bush and his policies thus far and couldn't stand the morale decapitation of the presidency by Clinton so I guess I'm kinda biased...

As for the actual topic of this post I have also heard this rumor from a reef store owner whom I respect alot. He didn't really go on about it too much but he has propagation tanks popping up in his shop. (He was going to have a frag tank and sell frags but now seems to be a prop tank.) We also brought it up and our SNEReefer's club meeting this month and I found it very interesting.

We are Doing something........

-Kalk, If I may let me reiterate this point once again. In the eyes of the MAJORITY of the people in this country, this hobby is unnecessary and plays a role in the destruction of the reefs. We as a hobby continue to give the powers that be an easy target by practicing business as usual. Try this, walk up to a stranger and tell them what the mortality rates are for the animals that supply this hobby, then ask them if they think this hobby should be shut down. Now try and tell them how this hobby really helps the reefs and see what their response is.

How bout we use the TRUTH, and explain how this hobby gives the islanders a reason to keep their reef healthy and productive and that it is much better to pick some flowers out of the garden every week then to dig up the land and sell the topsoil as filldirt or to blast the garden to catch the rabbits to eat. Which is what will happen if the demand for the flowers is stopped! Its so simple {the Truth} ?

Reefs are worth alot more alive than dead, does anyone disagree w/ that statement? Tourism, aquarium industry, food fish and shellfish. There are many ways reefs are valuable to island nations because thay have no other real resources.

The reefs where only fish food is the income, is where blast fishing is used . With the blasting, the dead coral is now an Algae reef. ..which in turn actually yeilds more food fish then a Coral reef. {the reefs which bleached in the1998 warm water event turned to green Algae mounds, now sport record huge numbers of fish never before seen {Maldives} There is little or no reason to keep a healthyCORAL reef for food fishing because a dead green reef is more productive. Look at the Phillipines, dead coral everywhere, yet still just as productve as ever for fish ? Agriculture as a replacement income instead of reef farming ,like timber[ Mohogany] the runnoff from the land creates green reefs..great for fish havest but kills the coral . Using live coral as fill for Airport runway building to increase ecotourism is not going to help the Coral . The Air port runway in the Maldives{Male Airport is the name I think} This Jumbo jet runway it has been calculated, used more live coral as fill then this hobby will use in the next 100 years! {using CITIESREPORTSyearly totals X 100 } Also with the new idea that coral die off in the Atlantic is related to human sewage.. dont think more tourists pooping in island waters is going to help the Coral either!
