Mary,

Didn't Paul say he would let us know who the industry operators on the MAC advisory board were? An article about MAC in the latest Pet Product News indentifies Eric Cohen of Sea Dwelling Creatures as one of the members. It also says Eric is on the Board of Directors of Reef Check.
Both Eric Cohen (wholesaler) and Rick Preuss (retailer) of Preuss Animal House think it did (Rick) or will (Eric) cost about $600 to become certified.

I remeber someone stating at the AMDA meeting at MACNA that it cost $1500 just for the inspection visit alone. How they could deal with the computer programming and co-mingling issues for $600 is truly amazing. Tom White told me he spent $50,000 getting his store ready for MAC certification.

I was on the advisory committee and did lots of advisin' for a while. Then when I got a little, shall we say controversial, I quit receiving any advisory committee emails. I mentioned this in a recent letter to Paul. Here was his response:

Info from MAC: In 2001, the MAC Board suggested we develop the Advisory
Committee on a more systematic basis, with criteria and Board involvement.
So the existing Adv Comm has been in limbo until we sort that out. This has
not been a high priority, so there have been no notes to the Advisory
Committee last year.

So if we're to believe Paul, the advisory committee has not even been contacted during all of the major developments MAC has been facing in the past year. Guess my question to that is WHY??? Wouldn't it have been a good idea to get the advice of a wide variety of people with different interests??

As a member of the MAC advisory board, I can safely say that, to the best of my knowledge, the certification process involves more money than $600.

Rob,

I agree. And nice to see you here!

Concerning my above post, has the advisory committee been contacted in the last year?? I used to receive regular emails, but none since I went turncoat ;)

Rob, Mary, Eric,

I would just like to know who all the industry players are that are on the so-called industry advisory board of MAC. It seems like MAC would release this information instead of making people dig it out one company at a time.

Mitch I'm still on the MAC advissory board, and I guess I'm still partly assoc. with the industry (more at the source end than retail end these days).

Mary,

From the level of activity since its formation, it appears that the advisory board has pretty much become defunct and has slipped back into the same type of lethargy and apathy that allowed the MAC DOA/DAA standards to be passed in the first place.

Rob.
