Is it possible?

A lot of what is said in the media is being pasted into this forum. There were 12 topics on the first page when I just looked. These articles are really great and I appreciate these opinions.

Would it be possible to create a seperate forum for these topics? If not, can we feel free to start pasting a bunch of articles that support the opposing view? Me fear is that this would clog up the industry forum with articles more than it already is.

Thanks in advance for any replies from a mod.

I have to agree.

There are many Philippine issues being aired out that are barely relevant as topics for discussion, on a forum dedicated to trade & industry issues:

Granted that evrything's connected to varying degrees, but maybe we should discuss the stuff we can actually DO something about ---and of course, preferrably something that directly affects the bottom line and supply reliability for eximporters and retailers.

Most of the "off topic" postings are quite on the mark.........when other industries and or events effect both our industry and the perceptions society has on our collection......those events become part of our discussions..........failure to sea the relevance non hobby issues have on our business is the reason we bring them out in the open in the first place!wink:

Kalk,

I couldn't agree more. That being the case, these articles clearly deserve their own space. Perhaps we could call it the Media Propaganda Forum, where opinions from all parties can be cut and pasted at will for people to comment on. If not, I fear that the industry forum is going to get even more clogged up than it is currently.

Kalk and Carterham,

I think it isn't a bad idea. I'd suggest a different name though.
Propaganda has a pretty negative connotation.

I'm not against putting links in the main forum when they pertain to cyanide use, but other topics that are only sorta on-topic would/could benefit from another parallel forum.

My only worry is that this forum would barely get used.

Regards.

I'd like to see these types of articles continue to be posted in the industry forum. One of the peculiar / special aspects of this trade is that it bridges commercial interests, conservation and development issues ... which means a broad perspective is key.

I think they will get lost in a "news" forum ... and IMO they are a good reminder of the bigger picture of the trade. We can all get a little one-eyed about cyanide at times.

I don't find the forum has been that congested lately. In fact, I think it has been a little slow (anyone with a contentious issue to stir????). 'Sides, the articles that get no feedback disappear into the great electronic void pretty quickly.

Cheers,

Blue hula

As a rare poster (in this forum)but avid reader I have to say I find these articles both relevant and informative. For example, some of the political articles are important so that readers can better understand a country/culture that allows cyanide use(and improve John's post count ;)). And as this is not he busiest of forums (as Blue Hula just stated) it seems to me that the 4or 5 active threads usually make it to the top anyways.

Erik,

I think that everyone who has posted probably finds these articles informative, myself included. However, we could be approaching a point where there are enough of them to warrant their own forum. This would leave the forum free of all stories printed in the media.

The industry forum wouldn't lack content when the media threads are removed to their own space. The forum would simply return to what it was prior to the current campaign and we would see great discussion. This discussion will even involve some of the same topics as the media is covering but we will not see articles pasted into the forum. It has also been posted that pasting the articles into the forums is in clear violation of copywrite laws, something which should be considered as well.

I know, why dont we move all the content to a new forum........that way all the upsetting subject matter will be remove and this will leave all those that want to remain in this forum,{ in an empty room} ........will be able to perfect both the art of net collection and tunnel vision

I don't feel that the articles necessarily warrant their own forum. Read what interests you and pass on what doesn't. Over organization tends to stifle discussion.

However, if you have 15 articles to post on the same day, maybe do them all in one post with links. ;)

Actually, it would leave us with threads such as "Whats in the soup?". Threads that actually help people who are in the industry, own LFS's or whatever.

It would leave us without stories that are being covered by the media and the current campaign to increase their exposure. I am fine with it either way though as I appreciate all the content. I just think that they should be in their own forum is all, or we risk the forum becoming even MORE clogged up with propaganda, as other points of view turn up in defense.

Point well taken.
I keep forgetting few of you who post here are as familiar with or inured to the political and social climate as those who live here. I guess I was thrown by what Rover described, the "15" threads all in one go. John meant well, but...

Furthermore, in my book, a subject like population control is a bit afield of this forum's concern, but that's JMHO.

Perhaps" behind the industry"should mean just that.............. not only the industry itself........... but all the thing that effect the industry?

Rover you are a genius!

That is a fantastic idea and a wonderful solution. If, by chance, the vast majority of the posts that are bringing attention to current stories that are being covered by the media are coming from a single registered user, that user could use a SINGLE thread and continually update it with links.

As a courtesy to that person, one of the moderators here could even sticky the thread so that it was always at the top for everyone to see. The author and babysitter of the thread could also edit the title of the thread and update the date of last input for all to see.

This solution keep every bit of the content right here in this forum. It also reduces the number of threads to ONE, so as the forum is not potentially clogged with large numbers of media topics.

Leave it to our moderators to come up with a solution as wonderful as this. Excellent input Rover!

Over a month ago I proposed to the administrators to create a forum for conservation and other related and interesting news. They thought it was a good idea; however it means removing an existing forum as there is only room for a certain number of these categories. The idea was rejected or possibly shelved.

You can blame me (as I post nearly all of these types of things) if there are stories you find uninteresting or irrelevant. But it is fairly easy to explain how most of these topics have connections, or at least interest to this type of community. By country, most of the fish for the marine aquarium trade still come from the Philippines. Issues like overpopulation have great relevance because it is the fundamental basis for the decline of these coral reefs.

I won't post so many within a short time, as I have recently done. I was in the mood to hunt down these types of stories and I found a bunch of them all at once.

I will continue to post these types of articles here at my own discretion until administrators or moderators ask me to stop.

The only problem I see with your idea of a single ongoing 'sticky' thread is that new articles and responses to older articles will be mixed into the same thread. It could turn out to be much worse and very confusing.

John it appears as though you were way ahead of me on this one. I really think that your idea was a very good one. When looking at the Forum index, I feel pretty good about saying that the new forum that you proposed to the administrators would get much more use than some of the others. We really need that new forum for these news articles.

I agree with John on this 100% and this will be my last post on the topic. Thanks to all who commented, it is greatly appreciated.

I for one appreciate the perspective they bring. I think the only issue is when they are posted rapid fire, and other topics get pushed further down for a while. Grouping them by topic within a thread, or delaying a post for a while would probably generate a higher quality discussion as it will be easier to digest and process.
