Reef Central has a spot at MACNA and reefs.org don't

I've gotta say I don't like the manner in which reef central is trying to politicize the hobby. I have strong reason to believe the situation will only worsen in the future. Instead of allowing a free exchange of ideas they seem intent on insuring only the side of issues they agree with, will be presented to their readers. This is the type of thing that happens when too much power resides in the hands of too few. I further believe they are exploiting the naivete of much of their membership. It is otherwise a great forum in many regards. They have great graphics, good authors, often interesting content, and a huge membership. I haven't contributed anything there in quite some time. Rarely do I even go there to read, other than to check out the featured tank of the month. I appreciate the fact that reefs.org offers much more to the readers than reef central ever will. Reefs.org allows both sides of the controversial true events that are impacting our hobby to be discussed. While I may use this forum to fight for the rights of brick and mortar retailers I also make sure that I contribute to the enhancement of the board in other ways. Despite 20-years in retail I have managed to retain the same love for the hobby that got me into the business to begin with. I give the best advice I can in the general forum based on hands on experience in the hobby and I have provided countless photos in an effort to help make reefs.org as good as it can be. I hope the moderators realize that I appreciate all that they have done to help make the hobby one that we can be truly proud of. I hope they are never forced to change their policies.

PS Least John L thinks I am taking a cheap shot I will be happy to discuss my opinions face to face at MACNA. This type of discussion would be shorted lived over there.

I usually conduct myself a bit more "fixed" over there (when I bother to go which isn't often anymore except to PM specific authors) but even still, more often than not in the public forums I wind up feeling like I'm sitting in on a catholic HS class where the teacher is an impetuous 12yo girl with a habit and a long, wide ruler.

Everyone's opinions on boards aside, it is as I mentioned earlier. A board (rc for example) is a component of only its members. If the membership allows themselves to be directed, that is their own choice. Its a commercial enterprise and as such it is accountable only to its financial resources. It is the same the world over.

I don't disparage their direction, that is their choice. But, I still don't believe having a meet and greet is a justifiable use of funds and time at a MACNA. Where are the other 10 boards/sites?

Thanks for your confidence Dizzy... we strive to keep the board an even playing field for all and have no intentions other than providing valuable information to the hobby as it appears.

I must agree.

I had over 2,600 posts on RC as nanocat, with the majority of them answering the noobie questions everyone else was tired of dealing with. I was banned once in Jan. 2004 and reinstated within 2 days after a couple of moderators went to John. (The banning related to a disagreement, but no foul words were spoken). Subsequently I heard several times from mods that John was "gunning" for me. Last month I was banned again. Surprise, surprise, it was the same moderator. This time there was no email, though he lied to John and claimed he sent one. Four separate mods contacted me via private email to express their disagreement with how this was handled. One forwarded the "lost" email, and claimed that mod was resending it. Uh huh. Funny, out of several hundred daily emails that go through, only HIS email is lost again :roll:
I emailed John, and no response.

What a joke. Helloooo, have we not heard of hotmail and yahoo, and anonymizers 8) I believe I've been banned another 8 or 9 times, and I've still got over 30 "identities" setup. I just hate to see a good mod with nothing to do.

The irony is that I still have full access to RC, but RC no longer has my contribution to answering questions. Hmmm, who was the loser again?

We do allow free speech and discussion, but board bashing doesn't do anyone any good.
